As long as you are in an area with good signal strength, they are fine. Get out into the "sticks" and the shorties definitely fall ... ahem..."short". :D

I saw a picture of a MINI with just a button Allen screw where the antennae screws in, it looked nice, and cheap too! They said it didn't hurt the reception.

You don't need a lot. The roof acts as an antenna itself.

I'm darned certain a ham on the antenna while really cool looking will draw varmints. Best stick with antenna donuts to be safe. :donut1:

:cornut: It certainly wouldn't hurt(definitely helps) and while you're getting creative; if the coil wire was a different color from the antenna..............endless possibilities..........

Mostly an XM junky here. My 6 inch stubby from MINI Mania has always worked very well anywhere I went, prior to the sat radio.

4" would be fine... And if you try to make your own coil, be sure the wire is varnish coated, like magnet wire, so the individual turns don't short to each other.

Good call. Do you think the gauge matters? I was thinking I would solder one end of the wire to the antenna base and just terminated the far end. How much difference do you think it would have having wire on a stubby?
