Huffin....... No..... Isn't that the sound you get when it gets sucked through the turbo??????:eek6::lol::lol::lol:
Me too, Jason. Paul (WA3EUE) Monica, I hope I didn't offend.. I'm just a radio nut. Or perhaps more correctly, simply a nut...
Radio nuts? I've seen some nuts hangin from the back of a manly crew cab dualy, is radio nuts somethin like that? Back to out topic: Antennas & how many donuts does it take to form a standing wave.....
I think the point is, if you are located in an area with good coverage, the shorty antenna works OK. As you move out of that strong radio reception area, well then the (longer) stock unit works better. My problem is, I like to hear the exhaust sounds with the windows down, so that's when the radio gets shut off....
+1 on that! Actually, the radio has never been on in RDNZL, only listen to iPod so when they say size doesn't matter.....
for $4 at your local dodge dealership you can get an antenna thats half the size of the stock one. part no. is 5064253AB
Thanks all for the great responses. I'm new to the group and an amazing at how quickly you guys respond in helping me out and sharing your opinions! I may actually try to machine one after seeing Metalman's success. (Great job btw ) Then i can just put the factory antenna in the boot for trips. So for an optimal length less than 4" would i be looking at 3.6875" (1/32nd wavelength @ 100MHZ)? Would it help to wrap 2' 5.5" of wire around it and epoxy over it?
:cornut: It certainly wouldn't hurt(definitely helps) and while you're getting creative; if the coil wire was a different color from the antenna..............endless possibilities.......... Jason
Mostly an XM junky here. My 6 inch stubby from MINI Mania has always worked very well anywhere I went, prior to the sat radio.
4" would be fine... And if you try to make your own coil, be sure the wire is varnish coated, like magnet wire, so the individual turns don't short to each other.
Good call. Do you think the gauge matters? I was thinking I would solder one end of the wire to the antenna base and just terminated the far end. How much difference do you think it would have having wire on a stubby?
:cornut:Gauge shouldn't matter as you're receiving, not transmitting. Drill a hole in the antenna where you intend to connect them and put solder and the wire in the hole together. It should increase your reception better than the stubby alone but not as good as the 1/4 wave length long wire. GOOD LUCK!(and,if you can, show us pictures) Jason
My engine/ supercharger whine + Plus Meth pump sound much better than anything on the radio or my iPod. :biggrin5:
