My guess is it's part of the "Flow Through" ventilation system and probably makes use of the draft vacuum at the rear of the MINI.

Yep... I think it's air exhaust for when you have "fresh air" coming in from the HVAC system. Which also helps get rid of the funky smell from all the dirty socks piled in th boot.

I am sure it allows your exhaust to breathe sound back into the car.

And I think it's also req'd because of the battery location.

Hmmm, I looked at the diagram which looks just like mine and made the *assumption* that MINI would change it up between the 2 models

Know what they say about Assumin' !

Thanks for the quick answers. I was thinking of blocking it off because it does let it quite a bit of sound from the rear of the exhaust.

If MINI designed it into the rear it has to have a purpose and you shouldn't block it off...

Classify this in the came category as the French Fry holder in the R56:lol:

    What he said ^^^^

And the thought that just because BMW/MINI did it does not mean it always works?

If you do not like the noise level you can get stereo sound pads to line the area and even pack the area with poly foam.

Oh ya moderators maybe you should relocate this thread to the R56 topics?

    Ha HA c'mon - You know I'm R53 Nitro!

Yes, I have some closed cell foam that would block out some of the noise that removing my seats has kept hidden.

I never even looked who this a thread was started by. Just wanted to jump in and contribute. :lol:Also I have been following a stupid thread on nam and trying to get some of the participants to come over here. It is difficult when I can not directly post on that forum. This so much better forum for information. And the MA T-shirts are great also. (hint)

Here is a picture of partly what I did for that area in the back for noise.

The vent area is also finished with the sound sheets.
