So, is anyone planning on doing this in 2014? Yeah, yeah it is early, but one can never plan too far ahead... This will be our first attempt at this event, have done MOTD the last 3 years and have decided to take in the scenery in the fall... Is this as well organized an event as MOTD? If anyone has links it would be appreciated...:biggrin5: TIA, John
It's run by Tar Heel MINI Motoring Club... Check with Twister... The Fall is quite nice... Very colorful time of the year with the foliage changing... There won't be any vendors... A much smaller gathering of MINI's... But a great group of people... Oh.... And little chance of rain, as in practically none...
John, Here is the link to the forum for the 2013 MSSD event: http://www.tarheelminis.org/forumdisplay.php?111-2013-MINIs-Slay-the-Sleeping-Dragon We are just now starting to work on the event so not much info is available yet. If 2014 was not a typo, check back next year about the same time in our national events forum area. We usually try to get through the BRP Tour before starting work on MSSD in earnest.
I went in 2010, I believe, after my first MOTD earlier that year. It's a great event but nowhere near the numbers. That was the only startling thing, but it's a great event at a very scenic time of year.
That's kinda the purpose, more like a gathering of friends then a massive party. Smaller groups, less traffic, easier to get to know most everyone. The 1st year was only bout 25 cars so virtually everyone did everything together, drives, ice cream run, dinner etc.
I've been down to the dragon at the end of October 4 times. It is a wonderful time of year to be there. Nice weather & lots of beautiful scenery. In my opinion it is the best time to be down there. I signed up with the Tar Heel folks for MSSD 2 years ago, but had to bail at the last minute due to the sale of our house. They seen to have things worked out & I'd recommend doing the dragon with those folks. One word of caution about October in the mountains. While there will not be loads of MINIs there, there will be loads of silver crested leaf peepers clogging various roads at times. Early morning or evening you'll find the roads free of them. Have fun!
That's more like what MOTD used to be. More time to drive less MINIs on the roads. No vendors, no reason to be anywhere at any real time. It gives you lots more time to motor!
considering going in fall as I hear it's a smaller group focused more on running the Dragon. I have never been up there and would like to check it out before the main event...
Fall is the best time to go down there. The kiddies are in school and the leaf watchers come out mostly on the weekends. The scenery is beautiful and the roads around the Dragon are pretty empty...great times for exploring and taking pics of the Fall colors. Of course, there are always the crotch rocket riders to consider, but all in all, it's just a great time with even greater weather.
