Why don't they just bring back the old Smith gauges?

 

Man, you are so out of date. The whole idea of modern car styling, particularly as espoused by Toyota, is to not only make the outside look like a psychotic shark that can threaten all other road users (to make its driver feel slightly less scared of road travel) but also to cut outward visibility to the smallest amount needed to barely keep the car on the road (thereby preventing the driver or passengers from seeing most of the things on the road that scare them - like other folk driving other psychotic shark vehicles).

I'm sure there is a big market for a vehicle with swing-down shutters with visibility slits in them just like a real armoured car. Painting some P51B teeth on the front would go down well too.

 

He's just overwhelmed, by the shear beauty of that design. :wink:

 

When mini built the gen1 car, the designers took a chance...
Toyota takes very few...and usually only in their cheapest entry level cars first if the chance enters production...anybody remember the...er..ECHO? Was a sub corolla compact...dash was kinda related to the first post...made to be simple, and easy to configure for left or right drive nations...reducing design costs and parts costs....
The Starr of new design trends are not always pretty....but often they take hold anyway....look at the "open mouthed" grills on cars or the f56 bumper....

That will be the new use of the word 'organic' as an abbreviation for: 'if a little styling is a good idea, a lot of styling must be a better idea'.

It can't be easy to get 1950s tail fins on a dashboard, but Toyota have managed....

Though when you see the outside (more random 'styling' added all over), it kinda fits:

 

I think they are going back to the styling that was used in the late 60's & early 70's. Those cars were atrocious & we are back there again. Hope this trend doesn't last long.

 

The Mini broke no new ground with its center speedo for easy conversion be it left or right hand markets. Many Brit cars were so configured. They did break new ground on its packaging. Pretty brilliant & copied by others.

Yes, I saw this abomination for the first time this weekend. At least MINI is not alone...

 

Problem I have with this car is I couldn't drive it unless I was sitting on a stack of phone books; seeing as how phonebooks are now digital, I guess I will be driving on hopes and dreams. The seat location in relation to how high that dash is...unless the seat has a 90's Reebok "pump-up" thingo going for it...I'm SOL

 

This is of course assuming the car runs lomg enough to achieve these goals.

 

It might be hideously ugly, but at least it's non-functional.

The only car I ever liked with a TV screen in the dash was the Knight Industries Two Thousand.

Lessee... 17 buttons on the steering wheel and 5 TV screens. That's gotta be intuitive. I have a 100 bill that says it doesn't even have Turbo Boost, but I be it's got an automatic transmission and marshmallow springs.
