GoFundMe, Kickstarter and Indiegogo are fascinating to me. They are like little social experiments to see what people find as an acceptable reason to ask for money/funding. I have had no problem contributing to Chris' rally efforts, but wouldn't even consider giving money to a friend/relative if they wrecked their car.
People were going on about having the pride to not do this type of thing, but I think the relative anonymity of the interwebs is what makes this easier for people to do. This guy was a good example of why not try and see if he could get some free cash out of it. At least he was upfront about it, he could have spun a story about how it was his only car and the money would go towards upgrading to a larger MINI so there was room for his sick child's wheelchair (because riding in a MINI brings said child so much happiness).

He just didn't think it through to the end...
His mind stopped when he envisioned buckets of cash rolling in...
If he had, he probably wouldn't have hit the "Publish" button... -
Bet he might have fought....I might get some flack, but if I get $500, it's free money...... -
His real mistake was announcing his intention to use the money to buy a new Chubster! If he would have said it was going towards a Chili Red R53, he would likely have had the down payment plus at least the first months payment.
