That review is a great example of the unfortunate effects of a reviewer's personal preferences. Qualitative is subjective. Uh oh, I'm having Top Gear flashbacks. :biggrin5: In fact, nearly everything he said about why the Toyobaru was more fun than the Mazda was a reason I'd have more fun driving the Mazda.
An intentional power slide to turn the car and set your line for launch out of a corner is one thing but otherwise all four wheels glued to the road like the car is on rails, that's what makes me grin. I'm not entertained by the need to constantly compensate to avoid tail-happy slides that waste my energy and momentum. And I'm not slating the reviewer, we all do it! That's my point. Based on what I saw if I'd been doing that comparison you'd have heard me frustrated by the GT-86 and then laughing while enjoying the Mazda, the more fun car; i.e., my personal opinions and preferences influencing my review.
He said something like "The guys in their Porsche's would pass you but then they'd look in their mirrors and see you sliding around and know you're having more fun." Wrong, sir! Well, for me. I'd feel sorry for you drifting around back there. Make a few adjustments to your suspension and change those tires so you can make the most of that greater power to weight ratio, then we can have some fun.-

This is one of my dream cars. I was 19 & worked at an Arco gas station. The owner had just done a tune up on a Ferrari 275. I had been drooling on that car for a few days so the shop owners says he needs to do a test drive to see if everything is OK. We headed out about midnight on SR 92 south he gets on it & stays on it for quite a while. He turns to me & says "we've been doing 140 mph for the last 3 minutes, seems like it runs good enough". The owner picked up the car & I never saw it again, but I'll never forget that midnight ride. :arf:

Nobody's posted here for a while, but I'm not sure where this is more appropriate. Supercars in Australia have a feeder series called SuperUtes. I think these are pretty sexy. I posted a long time ago a video of the Coors Racetruck Challenge, run in the 80's. This is somewhat reminiscent of that, but the trucks are more modified.
I wish Supercars would do COTA again. If they ever do return, I hope they also bring SuperUtes.-

Sorry, I've ignored this site for a while. Just got busy. But yes, it is indeed that.

Great lines and another version of that sweet old British sports car sound! I went through 4 or 5 exhaust systems trying to get that sort of a sound from my Justa Cooper.
Here's another vid, not a rally spec. Sorry about the muzak© but you get to see the gorgeous car and between musical interludes you get to hear the sweet sound.
One more for good measure.
