(I hope this is the right forum - apologies if i missed the target). My 07 MCS (65k miles) has started taking multiple starts to get it going in the morning. It starts, then idles really rough for 15 seconds, coughs, splutters and dies. Repeat 2 or 3 times and then we get going. Garaged inside or out, doesn't seem to make a difference). After that, it's perfect for the rest of the day. Recently had a failed ignition coil (replaced), and a full induction cleaning service to remove carbon. It now runs much smoother, but is still having a bear of a time starting in the morning. Suggestions from the crowd would be appreciated. Thanks.
Grab hold of a OBDII scanner and read the ECU to see what codes are present. Second, does it only hard-start and stumble when the engine is cold? If so, typically, the Coolant Temperature Sensor (CTS) could be to blame. - Erik
That's the exact symptoms of a failing high pressure fuel pump, which many (all?) R56 goes through. Time to visit the dealer
I've also got a 2007 MCS that just started showing these symptoms two weeks ago. Last month I had it in the dealer for a recall item and had them clean the carbon from the intake (the walnut shell thing) while the car was there. The rough running I had been experiencing went away and my oil consumption went way down as well. I didn't think the starting issue was related to the cleaning so I took my car to a local shop. Since the problem was intermittent, it of course didn't show anything at the shop except for some misfire codes. From what I've read, this has all the hallmarks of a failing high pressure fuel pump.
I know mine is 12 but the thermostat was bad in mine and it caused hard starts and rough idling in the morning til I got it fixed
