So, here's the story. I was doing my usual spring tire change over to summer wheels/tires and as I was lubing my caliper guide pins on the fronts I gave a good twist to the springs as I always do and the sucker was spinning all the way around the shaft. I know this isn't right so I started doing a more in-depth exam of the fronts. While spinning the springs around you can see the shaft rotating in the camber plate bearing. As I had these installed by my regular shop, I just wanted to see if anyone had any insights as to why this is happening so I can go back and ask them to fix the problem or get me new struts. My shop took a look at them and told me the Koni's were at fault as they claimed the upper perch is loose. Can this be right? I haven't had enough experience with the fronts to remember how they went together to know for sure. Thanks
Are you taking standard springs or coil overs? I ask because I'm trying to visualize "turning" the spring and stock springs have the edge that doesn't allow it to spin???
Yea....should have added the TSW v1 springs. They do have the"notch" on the perch that the springs sit on but they do spin off of it. Now to be clear, this is at full droop so I do expect some ability to move. But I don't think the top should spin and have the shaft move with it.
#1) Koni's only come with the lower spring perch.... The upper spring perch is something else... OEM, aftermarket.... Koni doesn't make an upper spring perch... #2) I assume TSW v1 are lowering springs... So they are shorter than the OEM... When you have the MINI up on a lift or jack stands and the wheels are off the ground the springs could lift out of the lower spring perch...
As I do.....this is why I always give them a good look over at the annual spring change over. Still not convinced the shop have them installed right.......
