I remember reading that the chrome ring can just be removed rather than painted. I do not know if that applies to all versions of the tail lights.

 

First Gens have to be cut apart, not for the timid. I did mine following a DIY from another forum that I'll post up later today. Oh and pics of my results.

Have done two sets on gen 1 cars, use the dremal to split then epoxy and black out tape to seal.
