Audette, Thomson and Wittmer Have their First Win of the Season (touringcar.ca)

Toronto (ON) â€“ The competitors of the Canadian Touring Car Championship (CTCC) presented by Continental Tire got on the track today to compete for the first time this season at the new Canadian Tire Motorsport Park. Heat, spectators and excitement were certainly there to make Round 1 a magnificent race.

Out of an impressive grid of 34 race cars, Ste-Anne-des-Lac (QC) Super Class driver Mathieu Audette started from the pole position in his Acura RSX-S, in front of Brampton (ON) driver Sasha Anis in his Hyundai Genesis Coupe. The two drivers kept this position from start to finish, with Audette increasing the distance on every lap until he had a comfortable advance of 6.433 seconds when the checkered flag was thrown. The third position was earned by Mississauga (ON) driver Dave Ciekiewicz in his BMW 330i. Ciekiewicz had to struggle with St-Leonard-Dâ€™Aston (QC) driver Marc-Antoine Camirand in his new BMW 330i, who finished fourth in class, and Barrie (ON) driver Scott Nicol in his Honda Civic Si. Nicol was battling for third place when he encountered a gearing problem. It was resolved by something as simple as a tie-rap, but by then had already cost him a podium position.

In the Touring Class field, there was a tight and very interesting battle amongst the competitors. Toronto (ON) driver Karl Thomson in his MINI Cooper S JCW led the way, again from start to finish. There was no surprise to see his teammate, Roxton Pond (QC) driver Michel Sallenbach, right behind him. Third place went to Tottenham (ON) driver Damon Sharpe in his Honda Civic Si and fourth place went to Markham (ON) driver Jonathan Young, who got his best career finish.

As for the B-Spec, CTCC had a first field of seven cars for the race in this class. Three manufacturers were represented today is this introductory category, with Honda Fit, MINI Cooper and Mazda2 cars. As if it was a completely separate race within a race, the cars kept a tight distance between them and were split from the others until finally being passed by the Super class after four laps. Three Honda Fit cars were honoured on the podium. Montreal (QC) driver Nick Witter finished in first place, followed by Toronto (ON) driver Greg Pootmans in second place, and St-Joseph-de-Kamouraska (QC) driver Simon Dion-Viens in third.

â€œI am very happy to have won today and the secret in this category is to keep your line and be aware of what is happening behind you,â€ said Wittmer. â€œI want to prove that you can race with this car and do nothing except cleaning it and watching the other racers working on their cars,â€ he continued.

Well, an eventful weekend for Team Octane @ the Nartionwide weekend in Montreal. The positives: Two 2nd place positions for our B-Spec Cooper (LauziÃ¨re during the first race and Groenke in race #2). Sarah Cattaneo had a very good weekend for her first time in Canada in car #45 qualifying in 4th place and finished in 6th and 5th.

The not so good: Firstly Sallenbach who loses a transmission in qualifying and subsequently an engine in race #1. A DNF that really hurts his championship position. Graphic video link attached.

Secondly, Gravel who ends his first race in the ....gravel, after a suspension failure.

But big congrats to Michel who finished 4th in race #2 after starting from the back of the pack in car #49.

Thank you to PJ Groenke for allowing Michel to use car #49 for the second race. I guess it was bittersweet since PJ went back to car #8 to finish on the podium, congratulations!

Enjoy the video. We do not expect another engine failure for another 5 years. Just like this first one!

Toronto (ON), August 28th, 2012 â€“ With the two last Rounds ready to be fought this weekend at Calabogie Motorsports Park, one of the great battles of the season will come to an end. Seventeen points separate Touring Class drivers Michel Sallenbach and Damon Sharpe; the challenge is on. B-Spec, Touring and Super Class champions will be decided on September 2nd after the final Round of the Canadian Touring Car Championship (CTCC) presented by Continental Tire.

Pressure is at its highest and everyoneâ€™s eyes will be turned towards Sharpe and Sallenbach. Despite a serious engine failure during the last event, Sallenbach will be back on the track with his No. 46 MINI, determined to win. Completing his first season with CTCC, Sharpe encountered multiple setbacks over the summer with his No. 84 Honda but his desire to triumph took over his emotions and got him his first 2012 race win in Montreal, and even closer to his opponent. Both men are prepared to fight for victory; may the best driver win!

Competition has been incredibly strong this year at all levels, and nothing is over yet. Although Super Class leader Sasha Anis and B-Spec Class leader Nick Wittmer have secured their top positions, second and third positions are not that obvious.

I see Alain Lauziere, and only Alain, listed as one of the 17 TC entries in World Challenge, but I also see Alain, Michael Sallenbach and Paul Gravel still on the drivers list for TC in CTCC. Nathan's right, we should wait to hear from Octane, then post a schedule...or schedules. Only trouble with that plan is World Challenge racing starts this weekend! Click here to see the WC schedule.
