I participated in my first Drivers School this past weekend, and I think I can put my name on all 10 points to varying degrees.

Slowing down now to speed up later really helps. In my deliberate slow down session at H2R yesterday, I made sure I was the last to leave the paddock/on-grid area. So I could go slow, not have to worry about cars passing me, and focus on my line and knowing the track/looking ahead. This resulted in a butt-hauling last 2 sessions of the day. It is amazing how effectively this pays off.

I think I'm going to give this to all my DE students. I would add one that happened to me 2 weeks ago. When you get to the track-calm down, relax and get your head on straight. I got to the track late, the shop was very busy when I left and I took all that on to the track with me. 5 laps into the 1st session I'm slidding backwards around 10 @ VIR because I missed my turn in. Driving is almost all in the mind.

 

Could you recommend a good beginners AutoX book?

 

Learn to read these..... I keed I keed here is the book I learned how to drive with.





But honestly the best thing to do and the fastest way to learn, is
1. know your car
2. have a mor experienced driver show you around the course, then have him ride with you
3. Start slow, watch other people, and then build your skills
4. SEAT TIME SEAT TIME SEAT TIME SEAT TIME SEAT TIME SEAT TIME

I can't stress enuff how important seat time is, you can read alll day long how to drive, but when it comes down to sitting in the seat there is no better way of learning.

In Ross Bentley's books he devotes an amazing amount of time on mental imaginary and it's importance, he likes to refer to it as mental programing...

 

Alan Johnson's book is pretty good and easy to read too - and only $10!

A 3 time national champion driving 911's, I had the honor and privelidge of working for him for about 6 years - during that time I rode with him more than a few times and he was smooth and fast!

 

This is like twist of the wrist 2 from Motorcycles... my holy bible which i still refer to some races always good to have a reference of fundamentals.
