I'd like to speak to the Why 9 question, if I may. There's fewer options available out here than you might be aware of. Now that California has fewer hand guns available for purchase to be used for CCW, the lighter 9s like the M&P Shield (whether you choose a 9 or 40 is a personal preference...) are proving to be very popular. As was stated above, 9mm cartridges are in fact a minimal investment. That did play a part in my decision process. But, also know, the lightweight frames, such as the Shield, have a different feel when fired. The 9 felt more controllable than the 40... for obvious reasons. That said, it became my second reason to consider the 9.
Now then, if I were in law enforcement, I'd be more apt to carry a 40 or something of that nature... As a backup, I believe I'd consider the Shield 40 or Shield 9, and/or the Sig Sauer P238, 380.
On another note, I've not gotten the feeling the sales folks are pushing the 9s. In talking to them at length, most buyers are already pretty well schooled when dropping into the shops. Conversely, there are certainly those who have none to little experience and are stopping in to see what's available for them to own to use as a personal defense weapon. It's the times... And, the mind set is we'd better get certified to purchase, and do so, before the 2nd Amendment right is taken away. I just went to a local gun show last Saturday and the hand gun selection, in the carry sized weapons, were nearly non existent in the cases.
I'm confident, that the 9mm defense load I'll have stacked (to carry) will do everything I expect and that's ok with me. After all, I can't expect it to sop up the pee after the shootn's done too.![]()

I can think of a few reasons for the popularity of the 9.
As Firebro said it's easier to carry than a 45.
As old81 said the amo is cheaper.
More rounds per mag because inexperienced shooters think they need as many as they can get.
Ladies like a smaller gun and they are a very strong buying sector right now.
Lastly no how big the bullet is if you can't hit the target it won't do any good.
I love going to the range where some people have big guns but can't hit the paper. I load one of my smaller ones and cut out the center. First time I was 10 with a 22 and there were a couple of Bengal football players with their shiny 45s-

I am going to be getting rid of most of my guns. I just got out the hospital after a bout of spitting up blood. Not a good thing.
Is it OK for me to post pic's of the guns I want to get rid of and ask for values? I have looked on line, but I can't find values. I don't want these guns in a Saturday afternoon auction...if you get my drift. My kids don't want them.
AND...I will trade for MINI parts and labor, if anyone is interested.-

OK with me, post away, then take it to PM to avoid the confusion if you get one of us old shooters interested.
I did not like hearing about the 'bout in the hospital', you take care of yourself. :frown2: :incazzato:
As an aside, I went to the Schomp MINI big rollout testdrive event for the Clubman today, 5280 had a club meeting before the event in the parking lot. It was close to 60 degrees.
You have to love Colorado weather for variety. The new Clubman surprised me, I liked it, the long nose is balanced by the longer body. I can see a use for this one in ALL4.
It sits pretty low, very long MINI....
I will link a set of pictures in the WDYODWYMT thread.
Also, I took some time to browse and shop at a couple our gun stores.
At Cabelas found the Ruger LCR 22 mag. Not up to my expected quality, felt good but something was off, I will keep looking.
Took a side run over to my local JAX outfitter store, one Charter Arms 22 mag, 2 inch barrel, again it did not feel to be what I wanted.
But low and behold....
Down on the bottom shelf was a newly released Smith and Wesson SW22 Victory with 5.5 inch barrel. Target and plinking pistol 22LR. I will post a few pictures sometime this weekend. Comes with 2 steel mags, tool to take off rear sight and mount the rail which is included. Box packaging was cheesy, but did include the barrel style lock which I left in the box, as all my pistols are in the safes.
Style wise, very similar to my Browning 22LR buckmark, but has some match grade components and accessories you can purchase from SW.
Off to read the manual. Will take it apart, clean and lube in the AM, perhaps the range on Monday.
Don
Btw, with browsing and purchase with background check ($7 in CO) in and out the door in 40 minutes pistol togo.-

Finally got a chance to go to the range with my Ruger American Pistol. The only thing I have to compare it to is a Browning High Power. The kick is more strait back and slightly more. I assume that is to be expected. The barrel is lower in your hand and the gun weighs less than a all steel gun. I really like the sites. I am going to change the sites on my Ruger 22 heavy barrel target pistol. I am not good with a pistol. I can shoot in the black at 25 yards on 25 yard targets with my 22, but not consistently with a 9 MM. With the new Ruger I am consistently low and left. That is better than with the High Power. I do not shoot much and practice is everything. I should probably take some lessons. Overall I am more consistent with the new Ruger American than the High Power and I should improve as I shoot more. I really like the way the Ruger feels in my hand. I always liked the High Power, but I like the Ruger better. I haven't changed the thickness of the grip yet, but I think I am going to try the larger one. I have big hands and the different recoil surprised me. It might change my grip so I do not feel I am holding the gun so tight.

I've been super focused on training. I shot two major matches in the last couple weeks.
I shot Area 4 Championships, and tanked. Tons of mental errors.
Two weeks later I shot The Oilfiled Classic and did much better.
I have one more major in November then I can get back to doing some AutoX and a touch of modding.-

My 11 year old Grandson got this one yesterday at dusk. Black powder rifle at a little under 100 yards. He wants to try my .308 Ruger Gunsite Scout Rifle as soon as rifle season opens. I told him he'd have to work it out with his Mom since she's been using it for the last two or three seasons and isn't interested in giving it up. It's one of my favorites, but I can't shoot it any more.

Yesterday and today was youth day for the turkey season that starts next week. This is my grandson Eli and his stepdad. Eli got this one a little after sunrise this morning. He just turned 12 and has loved hunting and shooting since he was 5 years old.

agranger MINI of the Month June 2009Supporting Member
FYI: The concealed permit process in North Carolina is taking about 6 months. It's been a while, but I believe that there are 6 different places in NC where they send a request for mental health checks (have you been committed to a mental health facility). They wait for at least 3 of them to come back as "no" and those are taking WAY longer than before due to resource constraints (they don't hire enough staff). I filed for my renewal 3 months in advance (as soon as I was able) and my license expired for a few months. The local sheriff's department sent a "Oh... don't worry about the expiration, the police know that this is taking longer than usual and they will cut you some slack." Yeah... right.

Yes, I like to shoot, I am a recent returning shooter.
When I was a kid, I lived on a small ranch in the country, it was normal for me to go out and shoot rabbits and other general varmits. I am talking under 10 in those days, I started plinking when I was 7.
When I was in the service, I did some range shooting but my field weapon was a camera, so not much shooting.
Currently I enjoy target shooting with my Browning Buckmark Micro 22LR, I have a cheap 1911-22 that is a good practice firearm, I get lots of jam clearing practice.
For the home, I keep a Beretta 9mm Storm, always handy, when kids are about everything is locked up in the safe.
For some reason I like the odd caliber stuff, I have been wanting a bolt rifle, so this week the opportunity came for me to get on the order list for a 22 TCM Bolt rifle, it is a new offering from Armscor Rock Island. We shall see if it is a good shooter or a POS.
Plan is to enjoy some range shooting and maybe a varmit or two with the proper licenses.
Thought, if folks are comfortable, post a picture of your favorites.
Also, since I do not own a revolver, I have to ask what folks enjoy and collect.

Why not have me build you an AR15 over the winter Don? Prices on the parts are back down around where they where a couple years ago... Yet if you buy a complete cookie cutter rifle in a box, they are a few hundred $$$ higher than they where.

Since it has been slow around here, I thought I would add this.... I have been looking for a Colt Mustang Pocketlite at the right price for some time.
Solid and nice little 380, if I get it cherakoted to pink, perhaps I can get my wife to shoot it. In the meantime I will run it a bit and make it my carry unit for the MINI.
