Put a Sig M11-A1 on layaway at Cabelas last night. Going to pick it up early January. Couldn't pass up the price.
I don't mean wait to purchase!!!I meant, Background checks are going to increase.....exponentially.....
Especially after the latest terrorist attack yesterday in Cali. No gun zone allowed them to reload. Prayers out to the victims.
I wonder how many of those purchasers were first time buyers...without any training in how to use it?
Sad but true! A firearms training certificate similar to a hunters safety card should be required to purchase a gun IMHO.
And maybe there should be a test before you're allowed to take advantage of the first amendment? You've got to remember that the right to keep and bear arms is a God given right. The 2nd Amendment doesn't give us that right. It tells the government what it can't do.
Every range except the state park I've been to around Columbus asks shooters if they have shot before. If they haven't they go through a gun safety initiation. I started shooting have I was 6. I never had a class and certificate until I got my ccw. It was just something the person teaching the new shooter does. My dad did it for me I did it for my kids and wife. I have thought a number of others to shoot also. I'm planning a MINIs at the shooting range next year to teach some other new people.
Well said Vetsvette!! mrntd MINIs at the range is an excellent idea. When I am asked by friends about getting a weapon for defense I tell them they should only do it if they are willing to train. I tell them if you had never driven and brought a car just in case you may need to drive someone to the hospital but didn't take time to learn to drive, the day you need the car it would be useless. The past few weeks, because daughter, niece and nephew have got their carry permit,I have been trying to teach them that the gun is not the plan it is part of a plan. Now lets go out and have sum fun shooting. Whatever you discipline is, IPSC, IDPA, hunting, steel plates, rifle competition and take some new and show them a fun time.
I've never owned a gun (beyond my bb gun as a kid) and haven't shot a gun in probably 20 years, but I always find myself drawn to the gun threads of any forum I'm member of. I believe that everyone should know how to operate a firearm and understand firearm safety, so the idea of having to complete a formal training seems like a reasonable requirement for gun ownership. While many people may have been properly trained by others (family, friends, at a range), there are likely also those who go out and buy a gun due to the fear mongering in the media and figure they have watched enough tv shows/movies or played enough Call of Duty to understand how to use their new purchase.
Unfortunately the tool we all use everyday doesn't require training (if your over 18) only a very simple test. Cars cause more death and injury than guns but they aren't considered deadly weapons. No one in Washington is calling for increased car control or background checks. Training is important for any tool to be able to use it right and safely. The person pick up the tool and getting in the car should be responsible for their own training. I know a number of people that do firearm training and their classes are booked solid.
If you learn and follow four laws, the rest is common sense and practice. The 1st Law: The Gun Is Always Loaded The 2nd Law: Never Point The Gun At Something You Are Not Prepared To Destroy The 3rd Law: Always Be Sure Of Your Target And What Is Behind It The 4th Law: Keep Your Finger Off The Trigger Until Your Sights Are On The Target
Would be interesting to see what the numbers are when you remove accidental death/injury (both from a car and gun perspective). Friend of mine had commented on this on FB: Politics: The solution: 20 million trained, armed, citizen marshals | Best of Cain Curious to hear what you guys think of the idea.
Interesting read B.A.D, makes sense in many ways, not sure it would fly, but nothing seems to be flying anyway.
I like that idea. I would sign up. In the article it says conservatives might not like "being deputized" "because it could offend the notion that gun rights are inherent and that no permission is needed from the government to exercise them". But this doesn't stop current concealed carry or interfere with any gun rights. Years ago I had ex-military friends that had carry rights and would volunteer to fly as air marshals. They would have their gun with them on the plane. I think this program is still going on but it's kept quite for obvious reasons. A number of Sheriffs around the country are calling for people to start carrying. Search "sheriff calls for people to carry guns"
