Thanks ya'll. So that is checking to make sure your are not a convicted felon, and or certified crazy I guess and to make sure your name, license, and SS number all match etc... Here in NC we have the "cooling off period" of either 3 days or 5 days before we get our permit. Atleast that is how it went the last time I bought a permit 15 years ago or so. Much easier since then with my CCW permit. Though I do have 2 co-workers who recently filled out their form online for a handgun permit and it says they won't get theirs for 14 business days..
Colorado is the same, paperwork then background check. Funny in Colorado, the staff has to walk you to the checkout area for you to pay for your new toy, then they have to walk you out the door. As noted, if the system is busy, the wait is a bit more, never more than 30 minutes. I will see how it goes with I find that Ruger I am wanting.
The last one I bought (GSG 5-22 MP-5 clone in .22LR) was right when the last big gun scare started... My wait time went from the normal 1/2 hour to nearly 2 WEEKS! I almost forgot I bought it when they called and said to come pick it up! Now I have no use for that one, so I'm thinking of selling it.
I haven't made it over to try my new gun, but I am very familiar with the museum. The NRA probably has the best gun collection in the world. Anyone in the Washington DC area should plan on coming out to Fairfax to see it. The NRA building is probably 10 miles away from the Air & Space museum at Dulles Airport. They have a SR-71, a space shuttle, and the Enola Gay, among others. The Ruger pistol was the first gun I have purchased sense moving to Virginia. At the gun show there were 100s of people buying guns. At the booth I purchased my pistol from there were about five people filling out paper work. A ATF form and state of Virginia form were required. They said come back in half a hour. When I got back I had to wait in line to get my pistol. I was impressed the back ground system was keeping up.
A permit to buy a handgun? I don't think that is in most states tbh. Here in Colorado the only thing you need a permit for is concealed carry. We even have open carry laws still! Goddamn handgun permit the idea makes me cringe
The only good thing about having to have a permit here in NC is they are good for 5 years so alot of people buy a few at a time. Granted might take a week or so to get them but then once you run across a gun you want there is no waiting then. Your background check was already done to get the permit. Just cash and go. There currently is a made rush to get ccw permits with classes popping up everywhere as they all fill up. Once you get that then you don.t have to worry with permits or background checks anymore.
Even with a CCW you still have to fill out the ATF form 4473 because it's a Federal requirement. Back when we had the stupid one handgun a month law, if you had a CCW you were exempt, but you still had to fill out the paperwork and have the Federal NICS run. Costs two bucks for the background check in VA.
When we turned in our CCW paperwork last month the Sheriff said that applications had doubled since the California shooting. The president is trying to use the California shooting like a school shooting to put in new regulations. But that incident has had the opposite effect and more gun have been sold and more CCWs applied for.
As far as he's concerned it was a case of "gun violence" and not terrorism. Looks better in the memoirs.
just picked this up at the exchange last week... S&W M&P Shield .40 added the Viridian Reactor R5 Green laser kit comparison between the Shield and Compact fun day at the range
What is the turn around time for the application? I wont be applying for mine till March when I take the class, but I was just curious.
They have to do it in 6 weeks. It was just a little over 2 for ours. I understand if you down to the Franklin County Sheriff it's faster. We went over to London to Madison county. It's more convenient from Hilliard.
thankfully having military PCS orders means while im stationed here in Louisiana i can purchase guns in MS and LA... im thinking a Springfield M1A is next
Love the SA M1A, but IMO they're overpriced for a new one. I would keep an eye on gun broker.com for a good deal. I bought my M&P-15 on a forum and with the way it was equipped and with the airline rated hard case it came with I saved around $600. Don't forget to take into account the cost of shooting with the M1A too. Even when buying through the CMP it's expensive. I bought my last batch from them for my Ruger Gunsite Scout Rifle. If you'r just looking for a nice handy .308 this ones considerably cheaper than the M1A. Disregard the MSRP. I paid $700 at my LGS. YMMV Ruger® Gunsite Scout Rifle * Bolt-Action Rifle Models
Today I was up in Loveland at my favorite Sportsman's warehouse store, looking for the next purchase. Sadly no and no on the Ruger GP100 22LR 10 shot or a Ruger LCRX 22 mg. Just like the size of the little LCR for walking around the farm in MO. Perhaps I will get lucky on the internet search.
