Dayum! Takes 10-15 minutes for state and federal background check here. Of course it'll set ya back $2. Is this one of the CA gun "safety" laws? I did love the central coast when I lived there, but I don't think I want to go back.
I'd like to speak to the Why 9 question, if I may. There's fewer options available out here than you might be aware of. Now that California has fewer hand guns available for purchase to be used for CCW, the lighter 9s like the M&P Shield (whether you choose a 9 or 40 is a personal preference...) are proving to be very popular. As was stated above, 9mm cartridges are in fact a minimal investment. That did play a part in my decision process. But, also know, the lightweight frames, such as the Shield, have a different feel when fired. The 9 felt more controllable than the 40... for obvious reasons. That said, it became my second reason to consider the 9. Now then, if I were in law enforcement, I'd be more apt to carry a 40 or something of that nature... As a backup, I believe I'd consider the Shield 40 or Shield 9, and/or the Sig Sauer P238, 380. On another note, I've not gotten the feeling the sales folks are pushing the 9s. In talking to them at length, most buyers are already pretty well schooled when dropping into the shops. Conversely, there are certainly those who have none to little experience and are stopping in to see what's available for them to own to use as a personal defense weapon. It's the times... And, the mind set is we'd better get certified to purchase, and do so, before the 2nd Amendment right is taken away. I just went to a local gun show last Saturday and the hand gun selection, in the carry sized weapons, were nearly non existent in the cases. I'm confident, that the 9mm defense load I'll have stacked (to carry) will do everything I expect and that's ok with me. After all, I can't expect it to sop up the pee after the shootn's done too.
I can think of a few reasons for the popularity of the 9. As Firebro said it's easier to carry than a 45. As old81 said the amo is cheaper. More rounds per mag because inexperienced shooters think they need as many as they can get. Ladies like a smaller gun and they are a very strong buying sector right now. Lastly no how big the bullet is if you can't hit the target it won't do any good. I love going to the range where some people have big guns but can't hit the paper. I load one of my smaller ones and cut out the center. First time I was 10 with a 22 and there were a couple of Bengal football players with their shiny 45s
Thanks guys. I pose the question because in my area it seems they are being pushed by some of the stores. As I said a few weeks ago I went into a gun store with my 23 year old daughter,(today we are going to go get her carry permit, do some shooting and eat at the range), When we were looking at pistols one of the guys tried to convince me that a 9 was more accurate than a 40. On top of that I have a nephew that is new to guns that just got his carry permit. He has not believed a word I have told him. I took him to the range the other day to teach him some fundamentals, not fun but must be learned. He had several jams, due to limp wrist, he kept doing a clearing method that I have never seen. I stopped him and asked what he was doing he said he learned it from some expert on youtube. I told him I did not want to argue with this expert but to stop it!! I showed him proper clearing methods, he had never seen before. Now I am no expert and I don't have a youtube channel but I thought I knew a little. I have been into IPSC shooting for a long time, I have had training, I have to requal every 6 months for a volunteer job, I don't think I am out of touch but I am getting old. As far as my nephews clearing method I asked around, some instructors and friends, they are guys that range from FBI, ATF, police, none of them had seen that technique. One last rant about my nephew. He bought a 380 for his wife, thats fine, but its basically a very small 1911 type single action. That is not a beginners gun! I have worked them that that is a a weapon that will take dedication on the range to be able to manipulate it under stress. My daughter and her went through the carry class together. My daughter used my H&K, she scored a 95 the heist in the class. Yes I am proud. My niece almost did not qualify. Ok so thanks for reading a long post. As has been said caliber is a personal choice and I believe you should have different sizes so you have carry options. I just was starting to think I was missing something. I am writing this after talking to my 21 yearly son last night till 2AM. He told me several times he knows more than me now because what he has learned in college. We just did not know what we know now when I was his age. His professors are all right and have no motives but finding the truth. Me I am just a close minded old nitwit that does not have the ability to understand science. :frown2::lol:
Good post. When I taught my Daughter to shoot, I told her from the get go that it was my way or the highway. After she has some advanced classes under her belt that could and probably will change. She actually thinks I'm a pretty smart guy now that she's raising a son and is doing most of the things she hated when she was a kid. I got rid of my last .40 when I traded it in on a new Kimber. I liked the caliber okay, but it was too snappy in a small auto for the minimal advantage over a 9. I've never been a big fan of the 9 in general, but came around when they started making the small format carry pistols like my G43. An important part of selecting what you carry is ammo choice also. The main downside of the compact pistols is mag capacity. I'm not comfortable with just six or seven rounds, so you also have to consider how to carry at least one additional mag. That's just my experience though. YMMV Edit: I guess I could always carry my BUG. Only problem is I only have three rounds of .41 rimfire.
Nice old Derringer, .41 rimfire is a bit hard to find. NLA or gold, your choice! Being a few months short of 70, I don't even want to think about teaching any of my kids how to shoot. My daughter is pretty proficient, actually puts them on the bulls eye at 30 with a Glock 40. Her husband sent her to class then gave a few lessons but she learned most from buddy of her husbands, a SFC Special Forces operator who is the unit instructor. I take hints from her and my son in law, he knows his stuff but does not put it out there for everyone to see. His Dad is 80, shots better than us younger ones, he can put a 1 inch group at 75 feet with his S&W 357mag. Hell I can't see the inner ring at 75 feet without a scope on a dark range. I will continue to shoot 9 and carry what I feel most proficient with each day. Always carry a backup so after I roll thru 3 fifteen round mags of 9mm, I have more to shoot, if necessary. I always have two spares whether it is the Beretta Storm or the CZ 75. I think I found an LCR 22 mag., just need to think if I really want a revolver with no external hammer. Sure wish the made a LCRx in 22 mag.
Hmm. The LCRX is new to me. While I was looking at it on the Ruger website I noticed that the LCR is now available chambered for the .327 FED MAG. If that had been available at the time I would have bought it instead of my LCR .357 MAG. Lot easier to control in the short barreled format and still has some impressive downrange ballistic stats. You can get the LCR in 22 MAG, but if you've just got to have an exposed hammer you'll probably have to wait a year or so. I think it took a couple of years for them to progress from the LCR .38 to the rimfire version.
Got to see and hold this last night. Doesn't look like much but it was Davey Crockett's first gun. He had the story and documentation to back it up. Really cool to be up close to that kind of history.
I am going to be getting rid of most of my guns. I just got out the hospital after a bout of spitting up blood. Not a good thing. Is it OK for me to post pic's of the guns I want to get rid of and ask for values? I have looked on line, but I can't find values. I don't want these guns in a Saturday afternoon auction...if you get my drift. My kids don't want them. AND...I will trade for MINI parts and labor, if anyone is interested.
Find a copy of the current Shooters Bible. It has conditions and values for most guns, both old and new. https://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_i_1_12?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=shooters+bible+2016&sprefix=shooters+bib%2Caps%2C2123
OK with me, post away, then take it to PM to avoid the confusion if you get one of us old shooters interested. I did not like hearing about the 'bout in the hospital', you take care of yourself. :frown2: :incazzato: As an aside, I went to the Schomp MINI big rollout testdrive event for the Clubman today, 5280 had a club meeting before the event in the parking lot. It was close to 60 degrees. You have to love Colorado weather for variety. The new Clubman surprised me, I liked it, the long nose is balanced by the longer body. I can see a use for this one in ALL4. It sits pretty low, very long MINI.... I will link a set of pictures in the WDYODWYMT thread. Also, I took some time to browse and shop at a couple our gun stores. At Cabelas found the Ruger LCR 22 mag. Not up to my expected quality, felt good but something was off, I will keep looking. Took a side run over to my local JAX outfitter store, one Charter Arms 22 mag, 2 inch barrel, again it did not feel to be what I wanted. But low and behold.... Down on the bottom shelf was a newly released Smith and Wesson SW22 Victory with 5.5 inch barrel. Target and plinking pistol 22LR. I will post a few pictures sometime this weekend. Comes with 2 steel mags, tool to take off rear sight and mount the rail which is included. Box packaging was cheesy, but did include the barrel style lock which I left in the box, as all my pistols are in the safes. Style wise, very similar to my Browning 22LR buckmark, but has some match grade components and accessories you can purchase from SW. Off to read the manual. Will take it apart, clean and lube in the AM, perhaps the range on Monday. Don Btw, with browsing and purchase with background check ($7 in CO) in and out the door in 40 minutes pistol togo.
Sweet. I gave one of those to my girlfriend. Hers has a plain stainless slide though. I prefer the engraving on yours, but that wasn't available at the time. She loves the pink pearl grips.
Old81, let us know how it works and which ammo you are using. Been thinking of getting one of those for myself to be able to shoot much cheaper then my 45. BUT it has got to work better then my wife's Sig mosquito which I have tried all kinds of ammo and none work more then 85% of the time. CCI MM work the best of course but it is sad that it won't shoot anything else and even it is not perfect.
I hope this one is as good as my Browning Buckmark 22 Bull Barrel. If so, it will shoot most anything. I will try out a variety soon.
Here is the first snapshot, I still plan on trying it out on Monday at the range, it has been a bit since I was over to plink. Well made little unit. Our range has organized a 22LR competition for February, might have to try it out, a Sunday night thing for a few weekends. Don
