Ambushed Arizona Trooper Saved by Armed Passing Motorist Who Shot Attacker Dead. A story that makes you feel warm and fuzzy all over. At 4:00 AM a state trooper came upon a single car roll over accident and noticed no one in the immediate area. He was putting out flares when he was attacked and shot in the right arm and chest. A struggle began and the attacker began pounding the troopers head on the pavement when a passing motorist stopped. The trooper cried out "help me". Boom the attacker was shot dead.
Today I did something I haven't done since I started using my tax return to go to the Dragon... I bought a new gun! And surprisingly it fits in with this pistol centric thread! Making it the 2nd pistol I currently own among my small arsenal of rifles... For a while I have wanted to get a stylish open carry compact pistol for defense against small critters on the hiking trails. I don't believe in the need for high capacity in a defensive situation (Particularly because if I even need ONE round, shift would have had to hit the fan) so I chose a pretty pocket pistol that only holds two LARGE rounds at a time. It's a Bond Arms Texas Defender (Derringer) chambered in .45 LC / 410 Shot-shell, and it fits my bill in every way imaginable. Small, rugged, simple, easy to operate, and big bore for short range knockdown power. As well as being a very classy and stylish looking piece. Build quality seems to be top notch, the thing is SOLID, and heavy for a gun of it's diminutive size. The hammer is stiff, the trigger is smooth and crisp, and the top flip break barrel action is smooth as glass with no play between parts. The finish of the milled stainless frame and barrel assemblies is flawless, and even the tiny rosewood grips are etched and finished to perfection. All of the number stampings are in line with a high end firearm, and it just feels good to hold. I haven't taken it out and ran any rounds through it yet, but I might before I head back to Carolina... Heck it will give me something to do as I am sitting around waiting for the next 18 days to pass. I've read quite a few reviews over the couple years that I have wanted to pick one of these up, and they all say that it's surprisingly accurate out to about 10-20 feet which falls in line with other pistols that only have 1/2" of rifling in the barrel.I just can't wait to see how controllable the recoil is shooting big loads from a pistol that is smaller than my vaporizer! Given the weight, I don't expect anything major, but it should be fun. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I would think something that small would hurt your hand to shoot such a large caliber. Let us know how it feels to shoot.
I've always wondered that as well. 410 shell would be nice for shooting the critters.. Looks like a nice piece and have always read good things about them..
Well I took it out to a piece of BLM land down the road from our family cabin this morning... LOVE IT! Just need to remember to aim high with the .45LC... 410 doesn't matter, because at 15 feet, the shot pattern using #4 shot loads is nearly 4 feet! Recoil... it's actually pretty tame. I could squeeze off both types of ammo left handed with no support from the right, and it didn't try to jump out of my hand. I almost want to say that it bucks less than my Glock 21 .45ACP! The down side: idiot me, decided to forget earplugs and she really makes some noise! I racked off 20 rounds total, 10 in .45 and 10 410s. I honestly prefer the 410 just because it's point and shoot with almost a guarantee that something is catching lead. For any kind of home defense, I would probably stuff a 410 in the top barrel and a .45 in the bottom, the 410 looks like it would cause a ton of "survivable" damage, then the .45 would finish the job if needed. I was shooting at my morning coffee cans, so no pictures of my horrible shot grouping, but here's a few from the day... Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Does anyone have experience with the Ruger SP101 in the 2.5 inch barrel, 357 mag. Both the hammer version and/or hamerless (DA) only? Thanks, curious is all, ease of shooting good as an armchair pistol? Etc... Thanks, Don
I owned an SP101 2.25 inch barrel for several years. Actually the barrel length is 2.25 inch, not 2.5, but what's a quarter inch on a .357. I wish I hadn't sold it, but the selling price was too good. Today, I couldn't buy one for what I sold mine for. DOH! Mine was a double action revolver. I have no idea what a "hamerless" revolver is. For general target shooting, I used .38 rounds. I kept .357 hollow point rounds in it at home -- it was the hip thing to do for "self defense" at the time. It was also my backpacking/wilderness camping gun. For that, my top priority was a gun that would work even if I fell in a river. I loaded it with .38 rounds for that. I was just looking for protection from a rogue coyote, not Sasquatch. To answer your question, using .38 rounds, it was very shootable at the gun range. I loaded it up with some .357 Hydroshock rounds once. Pulled the trigger two times. Damn near broke my wrist. I asked my friend if he wanted to try it, he said "NO." People near me in the indoor gun range stopped what they were doing to look at me. It sounded like a canon. Great gun, as long as you don't push it to the limit. CD
NRA Life Member here. Not shooting as much as I used to, but back in the day I nearly wore out a Dillon Progressive Reloading Press. After I spend myself into oblivion on my JCW, I'm thinking it has been too long since I bought a firestick. Hmm...
I have one, the hammer version. It's a fire breather and kicks pretty hard, but the quality is outstanding and it shoots very well. My ex shot it very competently (she preferred it over a Glock 17).
I just picked up a very nice Colt Mustang Pocketlite .380. Ya see, if you sell your MINI you can afford almost anything!
