That was simply poor driving. He hit the turn prior to the turn he went off on the wrong line and should have been standing on his brakes at that point.
Coming out of the that turn into the 2nd he was even further off the line and had no chance. A gas powered F1 car would have stood no better a chance if driving like that. -

Saw this on the news yesterday. Figured it had to have been filmed. I hope they recovered his rabbit's foot keychain from the wreckage.

From Clarkson's description it sounds like it was late in the day, they were generally done with the hill climb filming, and that "...James and Richard were going up the hill one more time."
Wasn't the rocket car crash scenario similar? Seems like he wanted to make just one more run in that thing too. -

The jet car was a tire blowing as I recall. This one looks like it just might be driver induced. Glad he is OK, lucky boy to have escaped prior to the fire.

Rimac Concept One legal release fine print....
Do not let Richard Hammond drive this vehicle, under any circumstances, during taping of the show... -

Why didn't the tires burn? Seems like they're usually one of the first things to burn...even one of the wheels is melted but the tires look fine!
And given this is an electric car - why did it catch fire?
It can't be fun for any MFR to write off a $2mill prototype, but they will learn a lot from this...... -

As we all should remember Lithium- Ion batteries can & do burn. I'd imagine the battery pack was compromised in the crash.

All batteries can go into a thermal runaway if punctured or shorted. It's usually got to be a pretty severe impact, so the same kind of circumstances that might ignite a gas tank can also ignite batteries.
It's why Formula E racing doesn't have hot-swappable batteries for the race cars. The thought is that a removable mounting is going to be less secure in an accident than a fixed mount, and could increase the possibility of an impact ejecting the battery pack into something that could pierce and then ignite it. You don't want removeable gas tanks for the same reason.
Shortcuts in manufacturing can also cause battery fires, which is what happened to the Samsung phones. If the permeable membrane is too permeable, the electrons can get exchanged too rapidly, which causes heat, which causes fire. -
On a related topic, loo what is coming back? They should have named it the Phoenix, though.

I got about 30 minutes of wheel time in a Fisker Karma near Carmel, Ca. Pretty impressive.

The Hamster seems to be exceeding his capabilities lately...
Maybe he should spend more time with his classic Mini... -
