During the time I've kept records, I average 71 miles per day. That does not include the car payment or insurance or property taxes or tag fees. The cost of the car itself (if spread out over 6 years which would correspond to about 150k miles at my current clip) is almost $11/day (and I haven't factored in the interest on the loan). The other costs would probably add about $2/day. Fully loaded I'm probably at $22+/day. :eek6: Not sure how good a measure $/day is since it is time based as opposed to mileage. Seems like it would be more suspectible to variance depending on the timing of major services. If I look at just gas, it is ~$6/day. That's roughly a couple gallons a day which is about right. It does add up.
+1 for fuelly.com, I've been tracking my mileage since I got my MCSa in January '10: Ruby - MINI Cooper S (Mini Cooper S) | Fuelly
I actually averaged better than 35 mpg on my 1000 mile 12 hour trip to AMVIV. Which included several triple digit runs of varying length....... And like Nathan, my direct commute is about 3 miles. But I tend to triple that most days to get the car up to temps. And I do have a nice 20 mile "road trip" I try to do at least once a week when there isn't any snow on the ground.
Let's see, I've been using Gas Cubby on the iPhone for almost a year. On my 2007 MCS automatic with 25,000 miles on it: 28.35 MPG average. The SCARY graph:
