Yes, a 1970 246GT, red with black guts.
It's a story I may have told before, but I'll be brief:
I was the parts manager at a Porsche+Audi, Fiat, Lancia, Alfa dealership and one of my "regulars" came in one day to buy some parts for his 911 (he was a regular because he was a drunk, and wrecked pretty much every car he owned)
While chatting about his Porsche and what had happened to it this time, he asked me if I knew anyone who could work on a Ferrari. As I had done so in a previous life I told him I'd be happy to take a look at it, so he gave me his address and I said I'd come out after work to see what he needed.
It was the dead of winter, freezing ass cold and after dark when I got to his house, and as he pushed the button to open the garage door this vision of beauty slowly came into view, it was almost like watching a strip show as the door slowly went up and a tiny bit more of the car was revealed!
it. was. gorgeous.
He told me what had happened (he blew the motor up) and explained that he'd had it to three different shops, all of who worked on it a bit then just left it sit, finally in desperation he decided to rebuild the motor himself. He'd managed to get the pistons in backwards (as in the flycuts for the valves were the opposite of where they should have been) and the first time he rolled it over he bent half of the valves.
I asked him if he would sell it instead, and we came to a price. I was pretty young and not well established financially, but I worked on a guys Jaguar E-type at my house from time to time, and this guy happened to be a loan officer at a bank - the same bank that had my checking account - so I called him. The conversation went something like this......
Me: I found this Ferrari....
Him: How much do you need?
Me: I have to rebuild the engine, but all the parts I need are included
Him: How much do you need?
Me: It's in really beautiful sha.....
Him: How much DO YOU NEED?
So I gave him a number and he said "come pick up the check". Oh, and I get a ride in it when it's done!
So I spent the next three weeks out in this guys freezing cold garage in the dead of winter overhauling the motor and transmission scouring the world for the bits that got lost as the car had been taken from shop to shop, and one night abot 11 pm I turned the key for the first time. It roared (I didn't have the exhaust on!), lights came on up and down the street and he sauntered out (with a drink in his hand, natch) and said, "Well, looks like you got it running"...
I kept it for about two years, drove it thru all sorts of weather including snow and it never let me down. It was definitely the one that I should never have sold! This was in 1975, BTW.
I guess that wasn't so brief....sorry for the hijack!
We now return you to your regularly scheduled thread!
