Since air travel just isn't fun anymore, we make getting there part of the vacation -- and we pretty much always drive now. By the time you drive the hour to the airport, get there two hours early for check in and baggage, then wait around, fly in a cramped plane for three hours, then go thru the same ordeal claiming baggage, getting the rental car, then getting to your hotel, we could have driven in the comfort of our car, stopping when we need to, and enjoying the scenery - plus we can take the Mini-Poopers with us!
We've been to North Carolina several times, and as far west as Wyoming, but Phoenix (where my other grandkids live) is a bit of a stretch - for that distance or to go to the west coast I think flying makes more sense - but I stil hate it, and we can't take the dogs. Driving means it'll be more than a 1 week trip, but that's OK with me.
There are compromises which ever way you go, but I'd rather drive and see something new, so I'll take a couple extra hours on the road to drive a new road and see something I haven't seen before.
For me it's more the jouney than the destination.

I would likely go see Mt Rushmore while in the area but Yellowstone certainly looks like a blast(I only realized the pun as I typed)
What would you recommend for lodging while in the area? Hotel or camping? -

Going to a MINI event in Arkansas in the fall. Did our own run down there in June, great roads were found, and run, with no one around:devil: -

Another highly recommended spot in my book is St George Island, Fl. Miles and miles of unpopulated beach, not the kind of place to be active, unless you consider excellent seafood and beer to be active.
But if you want a place to relax and regroup you can't ask for better.
Of course you have to get the MINI
