Nope, so far only at friends houses and portable ones. Just spent a few minutes doing a little googling and looks like no one has thought of producing a high powered wireless sound system for cars that don't req. a head unit. Somebody needs to come up with just such a system for those folks (like me) that simply want to hear what I have on my phone and not the crap on the air.
Yeah... acoustics are much harder in an open vehicle, than in a quiet room with solid walls. So you really need multiple speakers placed around you, like the OEM setup. And that means wires to power all of them, at a minimum. At which point you might was well use those same wires to get signal to them. Then you have what we have now. Certainly my wife has a rechargeable bluetooth hands free single speaker in her car, and it's "OK" for mono audio for GPS directions, phone calls, etc. But is not the Hi-Fi experience I'm looking for, for my music. It's possible I'll just relocate my head unit to the passenger-side euro parcel shelf. All this stuff will be one of the last things I do, in a couple of months. Low priority, really.
Let's be honest, Paul.... at the pace you completed Locutus Mk1, you'll be tackling this radio issue in about 3 weeks. You don't have a big of a learning curve to overcome. Plus, you already have practically everything in hand. Well, the big ticket items anyway.
Volume control is a little more tricky... Sometimes I would just run an external equalizer with a master control, but that complicates things a bit... And lets face it, you're not building the G3ness for audio competition. I would just get a good mount for your phone or i-Pod, and control the volume off of that.
Just swap the switch bank with the radio position wise, problem solved, and the harness has enough slack to make that all work.
I looked at that... but there's not nearly enough depth for the head unit, in the position where the toggle panel lives. There's heat/AC crap in the way. The harness definitely has enough slack to reposition it there, or even into the space where the glovebox lives.
With the shell gone to the cage shop, time to get the wreck back on the lift... But I didn't feel like tearing stuff apart today. So I built something instead. Been needing to get extra wheels up out of the way for a while. Priced pre-built wheel racks, and decided to build instead. Found a design I liked, with a DIY, here. I built two and stacked them. Room for 8 wheels - my track wheels, and either my all-seasons or my summer wheels, when the others are mounted. Today's parts arrival: the stuff that saved my life. Schroth Hybrid II complete set, plus ASM shoulder belt for street use, and replacement brackets for my lap belt. Not taking any chances, reusing nothing. Also, a big tool: This should help a LOT with transmissions and subframes. It's a little taller at minimum height than I thought. The tilting table is quite tall. I may build a simpler fixed platform for it that will make the overall height about 6" shorter. Should give me enough clearance to drop things out of the car when needed.
Mostly true. I rarely listen to anything else. Mostly on long trips on the highway, en route to a track or Fontana.
Sounds like headphones are the answer..........you know the "great big donuts hanging off the ears" kind.
Today's progress: Dropped and stripped subframes, stripped most of engine bay. Another hour or two, and engine bay and underside of car will be done. Yep, this thing is handy. Also, MOAR PARTS!!!!! From eMINIparts.com: Front panel, underbody panel, bumper beam, wheel well liner, intake ducts, rear wheel bearings, mirror caps, right wishbone, rear trailing arm brackets, main battery cable, and some hardware. And Steven included some awesome swag!
Hmmmm. Obviously some cutting of something was required... but I'll look at it again, when I strip into the interior of the wreck.
Wife: UPS left you another big box while you were out. Me: Huh? I don't know of anything that should be coming today??? Well, Santa arrived, and was good to me. ERMAGERD RMW race header back from Swain Tech with the White Lightning coating. It is RIGHTEOUS. They did a spectacular job. Masked all the right stuff, removed the collector and masked the primaries where they should, and didn't lose the bolt. Not cheap... but really really good. This coating is so much nicer than the run-of-the-mill ceramic I could have had done locally. Glad I bit the bullet. Took a month from the time I shipped it, until it came back. So don't be in a hurry...
