A few days after I got my MCS I was cruising down the highway late at night, and another MINI flew by me honking and waving! It was so exciting. I had heard about the wave and have been doing my part, but I've never gotten the same response. I even saw a guy in the same year/color combo but he wanted nothing to do with my wave.
I rented the Fiat 500 on a whim. I need a car until my Roadster arrives and the Fiat caught my eye at Budget. Good mileage and not too bad to drive. Unfortunately, I can't get Charlie Sheen to come drive it around my house.
I don't much like the 500 .... Something about the blah looks of the front end. However if the Abarth came with the hot Italian girl in their commercial.... I'd buy one in a heartbeat. (Then I'd put a tarp over it in the garage)...
I had a lady and her daughter wave at me at the local Burger King today. I think that make the second to wave at me including the old guy on Stringtown road that waved to me from his awesome classic mini. It's was brg with a Union Jack on top. It was even right hand drive. Very nice ride.
[/IMG]Some of ya'll need a sticker!! Not sure why once you click it, it doesn't enlarge. I'll try something else..
Till I have a day to fix my Mini I've been driving the spare car. Its a 1988 Acura Integra. I have caught myself starting to wave every time I see a Mini.
IMO, "The Wave" is a Jeep thing and has a very long history (began during WWII). I've owned a few Jeeps over the years and I would feel like I'm stealing or insulting a piece of the Jeep culture, so I don't wave and if I do it's a Jeep wave--2 or 4 fingers raised from the steering wheel. But that's just me, wave if you want.
Urban legend. Almost all drivers in rural areas waved at each other as they passed in the 1930s and '40s (and through the 1960s). In WWII, GIs (whether in a Ford/Willys Jeep or a Dodge PowerWagon) waved at each other... especially the AA guys driving the Red Ball Express. In the 1950s USA, most British car drivers (MGs, Triumphs, and Healeys) and ALL Porsche drivers waved at each other (Porsche drivers kept it up until the 1980s). It's great that CJ and Wrangler folks wave, but they didn't begin it, and it ain't exclusive with them. Wave On!
I just don't think waving is brand specific it just says, "Hey! I noticed you have the same car as me so you are my brethren." And being on this site one should know we have are own social club so waving is like inviting people to join us. Now if Honda drivers started doing it then I would worry about my own safety as their hands would never be on the steering wheel.
I don't believe waving has much to do with being vehicle specific. Bus drivers wave at one another, cops wave at each other, firefighters and medics wave at a passing engine or ambulance... Bikers wave at each other as do cyclists... Hell even the trash haulers wave at each other. Of course some of the folks mentioned above might likely know each other, but not all do. I believe it's all about etiquette and a display of respect and appreciation for someone who shares in the same love for their vehicle or profession. Pure and simple, in my mind, it's absolutely a gesture of kindness. There ought'a be more of that going around.
^^^^ I agree and here in the North East we don't use the old five finger wave we tend to only use one finger. Wrong finger but you get the idea >>>:ihih::lol:
