If I had to guess it was not stolen but removed during a recent service that required front bumper removal and the tech accidentally forgot to replace. I expect you will get a call that a tech found it on a workbench in the shop.

Is what happened?

Yeah, sadly. Now I have to beat my mechanic with a dirty sock with a tow hook in it. Don't know what I am more upset about. Him forgetting to put the damn thing back on, or messing up a perfectly good rant thread. At least he let me tow the car on his trailer for 100 miles. Maybe I will go hide his grease gun, or something.

That is too funny! When I got Spike back from replacing the sunroof and the Chain Tension Special, there was this black stuff on his chrome exhaust tips. At first I thought the shop had backed it into something and damaged the tips. I was sure of it in fact. I was going to call up and give them a hard time. Then I decided to try wiping them and getting a closer look. Sure enough it was just some melted rubber from the vacuum hose they put on the shop when they idled the car.

Did you at least get a clutch upgrade?

Many many years ago, when I was young and naive, I had my VW Scirocco broken into twice to have the stereo 'removed'. The first time they broke the window then unlocked the door and helped themselves.
The second time they broke the vent window and got in. I had the passenger window taped up with polly for a week (in the rain) before I could visit a claims adjuster. When he inspected the car he removed the plastic and promptly rolled up the 'broken' window. I had been driving around for a week assuming the window was gone, simply because of my first break-in experience and due to the glass on the ground (which on second thot was very little).
I know this has nothing to do with your nice Plasti-dipped tow-hook, but I thought I'd share never-the-less  -

I can see it all in a police report.............
Innocent, happy go lucky, fun, full of life person assaulted by irate "person of interest", goes by the moniker "goaljnky", while attempting to slip a spotter card under the wiper arm of a small fast car. -
When I was in for an axle seal leak about a month ago to the dealer, I got the MINI back without my antenna!!!!! WTF?????? :mad5:
I freaked out, but didn't go nuts on the dealership, thought I'd wait and see what happened..... turns out it was loose, and fell off during the courtesy wash.
They immediately ordered me a new one from Alta and had it shipped to my house.
I was glad I didn't bite their heads off right away, then I'd be labeled, "THAT customer", and I'd be forever getting my car back wreaking of stale farts or something
Glad you got your tow hook figured out -
