What does the 'Baby On Board' do other than make me take my eyes off the road and increase the risk of me running into you and driving you and your stupid ass sticker off the road.

Like allot of things in this country we take a well meaning tribute idea and overdo it to the point it loose's the significance that was intended

Sometimes this is a culture difference. The "Day of the Dead" or in spanish "Dia Los Muertos" can sound a little morbid to many of us Anglo-Americans.

But when you learn about the day, it is really a day of appreciation for those who have gone before us. Showing respect can come in many forms in many different cultures.

Earlier this year a woman brought here car to me to do a little repair on the bumper, on the rear window was a decal " In Memory of Anna Marie" it was her three year old daughter who was killed in an auto accident six weeks earlier. Knowing the back story on the accident I told her how sorry for her loss then I didn't have it in me to charge her for the work, I am just a softy I guess.

While I generally disapprove of the stick-figure family decals, I personally think this one is hilarious. That being said, they'd be stoned for sure if they came down here south of the Mason-Dixon...

PALM DESERT, Calif.

WHEN David Atchison, a high school senior from Palm Desert, Calif., died in a car accident in April, one of the first things his brother and friends did was begin designing his memorial decal. They came up with two designs, working on a computer at a decal kiosk at a local mall, and the day before the funeral, they presented them to his parents. Friends and family members could buy their own at the kiosk, where the design was kept on file.

"I think it's beautiful," Mr. Atchison's mother, Gina, said. "About a month after it happened, I went to the high school and almost every car had a sticker. It moved me and put me to tears. I called my husband and said, 'You need to drive to the parking lot and see this.' "

For years drivers in Southern California have been using their cars as whizzing classified ads, announcing everything from house cleaning to property for sale to weight-loss plans. But these days car owners are increasingly using their vehicles as rolling tombstones, placing personalized memorial decals with names, dates of birth and death, and brief sentiments on their rear windows. Sometimes they add crosses or angels, the kind usually chiseled on gravestones.

Dozens of Internet sites make it easy to custom-design such decals. Suzanne Thomas, co-owner of Custom Signs Decal Junky of Columbus, Miss., said she gets orders for memorial decals every day from her Web site (decaljunky.com), and ships them all over the country. "When we started our Web site three or four years ago, we didn't even think of memorial decals," she said. "Now, it's about 20 to 30 percent of our business."

Lately, she added, she has been selling a lot of war memorials, such as the 50 decals that a woman ordered in memory of her nephew who had been killed in Iraq.

Arturo Ramirez of Cathedral City, Calif., who expressed his grief over the death of his friend Ernie Zamorez in a car crash in October 2004 by having 50 car decals printed at $5.50 apiece, said he sees the tributes primarily on cars of people with Latin American backgrounds. Trips around the Coachella Valley and Los Angeles freeways, however, turned up other backgrounds as well. "In Loving Memory of Rocco DeJoseph" read one decal on the back of a blue Saturn, positioned next to a decal proclaiming "Italian Princess."

Those who study the way societies process death see the decals as yet another iteration of an increasingly mobile and transient America. "We try to keep track of our dead," said Thomas Lynch, an undertaker and poet in Milford, Mich., who has written two books on the culture of death. "We're the only species that does. There's a need to name the loss, to give it some texture." The decals, Mr. Lynch said, are "bringing the cemetery to the freeway."

Gary M. Laderman, director of the graduate division of religion at Emory University in Atlanta and the author of two books on funeral customs, said the decals bring a do-it-yourself mentality to memorializing death. "It's part of the post-60's consumer empowerment, where everything can get caught up in commercialization," Professor Laderman said. "Before, it was left to the funeral home. Now you take the production into your own hands and have it your way."

In Southern California, where so much of life is conducted in cars, many people say it makes sense for death to be reflected there too.

Leanne Fuller, the girlfriend of Ernie Zamorez, said decals were the most efficient way to get word out about his death. "He had friends from high school who didn't hear anything in the news, and they see the car and know he died," she said, adding that she will keep the decal on her Honda Civic until it falls off

I wish I still had the picture of the stick figure family that me wife saw on the back of a mini van at Walmart. It was the Ass Family (jack ass, dumb ass, smart ass, and I can't remember what the fourth one was)!
