Hey.... I bet nobody ever thought they would seriously say top gear USA would be better than the euro original....
But this is exactly why Top Gear will fail. It took Clarkson years, and a little bit of luck, to discover the secret sauce. The current Top Gear is constrained by its format--no one, the BBC especially, doesn't want to deviate too much from that, and the current cast pales in comparison to the originals--Chris Evans trying to play Clarkson in the opening segment was just painful to watch. People are tuning out--a show where people drive around looking for crap in people's attics trounced Top Gear. The show is horrible. But it gets worse.... People will soon have an alternative, the original three, any day now. Clarkson had no competition while developing Top Gear, the new Top Gear has to compete with the cast of what was the number one rated show in the country, along with its executive producer. Good luck... The funny thing is Clarkson himself said he was getting a bit bored with the format, but he couldn't shake things up. He can now. Add to the fact that he misses doing Top Gear terribly, and is more motivated than he had been in years, as are Hammond and May. The fact that they turned down huge amounts of money to stay with Clarkson speaks volumes. Top Gear is going to die an ugly death, the only question is how quickly. In retrospect the BBC should have suspended Clarkson for a year. He would have realized how much he missed it, and the BBC wouldn't have lost their signature show.
Yeah, I agree with your points there. They need to realize that it's not "Season 23" but "Season 1" of New Gear, and try to build something unique. I think that's going to be a tough lesson to learn, but I'm willing to give it a shot. Because I can always watch Grand Tour too. But yeah, if they don't make the show their own then New Gear is doomed. That's why I think their second season will be better. They'll have had time to really work together, see what's good, what's bad, and come up with something else. The name may stay the same, but it's a brand new show and as soon as they figure that out... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
