Mazda is not sitting on the sideline either with a new, smaller, lighter MX-5 coming next year too...

As Mini and BMW seem to be hell bent on making everything bigger, others are rushing in to fill the void.....

I'm sorry but when Mini finally came out with the coupe and it was/is what it is, I new they were not serious about performance....it missed it's mark completely and left this enthusiast with roaming eyes....

Power & handling are great don't get me wrong, but if I could have only one I'd take a well balanced small power car. At 200HP the FRS/BRZ does not seem under powered to me. Seem the selling point should be a well balanced car.

I guess it is just me. I am certain these cars are great performers and will do great things, but I had to look them up to see what they were and when I did they look just like all the other cars on the road. I may have even seen one in real life and not known it. Me, I want something that looks different, but I'm old, so what can I say. :D

It's a nice looking car on TV. Plus I did see the sister car at a car show last weekend. Not to sure on the specs etc.

However, It is a Scion FR-s not a Toyota. I know, I am being picky, blah blah blah. Scion is a sub brand of Toyota and it is full of Toyota parts.

But on the other hand, How do you like your BMW Cooper, Clubman, Countryman? If your like me that stings a little. We drive MINIS. Those are Scions.

I need less caffeine in my life.............

Maybe you are right. True story; One of the reasons Toyota launched the Scion brand name was due to the fact that the Toyota brand name registered poorly with their target market; The younger kids. it seems that them yungins thought Toyota was their parents generation, old boring camry. (kinda like Buick is to some of us. Or was at one time).

However, when they launched the gen1 XB, they sold a crap load of them to the 40+ crowd that needed space but was tired of mini vans.

This concludes our lesson is marketing demographic failures........

Not over powered? Is that really a selling point on any car?

Scion/Subaru miscalculated the demand, which they'll freely admit. The U.S. allocations were based on a percentage of STI sales--and demand has FAR exceeded what both Toyota and Subaru anticipated. They'll catch up, but it's going to take awhile; demand is going to far outstrip supply for at least the next year. For the life of me I can't understand why people who love MINI's, and "get" what a MINI is, aren't enthusiastic about this car. All I can say is drive one. Actually, don't--you may regret not owning one.

If you don't think a car can be overpowered, try driving virtually any of the AMG's.....Great power, so much so it's pretty much uncontrollable.

Then there's the videos of the 300HP classic MINI. Even a professional driver couldn't handle it on the track. Great video though; every time the turbo kicks in, the car almost jumps into the air.

M5's are great cars. I get a nice view of them as I go by them on the track (Blackhawk at least).

Besides, if you have a powerful enough well balanced, light car, they can deliver miles of fun to the driving purist on and off the track!! Don't believe me, ask the litterly thousands of Miata racers around the world.

.....and you know 300 hp will be just around the corner in this platform!!

Driven plenty an AMG. A family member is a big fan. Didn't think it was anything an adept right foot could not control. Drove his V12 DB9 last night. Same story. Nice car, by the way.

Anyone who bought a 4100 lbs four door sedan (M5) for track use I think is missing the point of the car. That being said, I'd love to take mine out for a session, or two just for kicks. Sadly, the spousal unit has repeatedly exercised her veto power on such endeavor. She's probably right, though. I know the tire bill would for sure lighten the wallet.

Not by much. x2.5, or so. :cryin:

Toyota has an engine, but they didn't build that. Somebody else made that happen... ... Which is why they can claim a first when they put their proprietary D4-S port and direct injection on a tried-and-true boxer engine.

I drove an FR-S before I drove the MINI that I wound up buying. That ought to say something right there. The FR-S is a very sweet car but it is simply not as fun as a MCS is. Not to mention the fact that the MINI gets better mileage, is more practical, faster, and currently has better aftermarket support.

I am a huge old school Toyota fan and have owned several Toyota performance cars over the years and was eagerly awaiting the FR-S so that I once again would have a Toyota to buy. I really, really wanted to love the FR-S but sadly all I could do was like it a lot. The MINI won me over quite easily and I am generally not a FWD guy.

Read somewhere that Nissan isn't planning on standing on the sideline and intends to come out with their response to the FR-S.

    Could be exciting times ahead...

Do we now have a good clue as to your MINI replacement? :biggrin5:

I like the BRZ/FRS twins. They are nice cars IMHO. Not over powered & nicely balanced rear drive. What is not to like?
