Welcome, thanks for joining Motoring Alliance, the FUN and Friendly MINI Community.
A change of the gear oil may help out. MINI says it is a lifetime fill, but it's not.

Welcome....
Yeah...maybe a flush and fill might buy you some time...
The midlands 5 speed that was used up till the 2005 model year was a bit trouble prone....
In 2005, mini switched to a getrag 5 speed...used different CV joint/axels...Different spline count...so not sure if these are trurly swappable.... The change to a 6 speed from the s...know it has been done on CVT cooper (auto) cars.... Not sure about the 5 speed.
Good luck...tons of info around!!-

If you are lucky it is low on gear oil & changing it will be the cure. If not it may buy you time until you have to replace the gear-box. Your car has a Midlands if you change it make sure you put a Getrag in. Not sure if the 6 speed is easily swap-able.
