The transmissions in the 2002 - 2004 Coopers use a Midlands gearbox & are not the most robust design. Look for a 5 speed from a 2005 or 2006, Getrag's are a much stronger gearbox.

I guess no one brought up the point that it could also be the CVT Transmission. I didn't see where it was specified if it was Auto or Manual...

Is your MINI a Cooper or Cooper S?
This is a good place to check..... Car-Part.com--Used Auto Parts Market
Welcome to M/A! -
I believe it is just a cooper not an "S" - it is a R50 - so perhaps that should tell me! Thank you for the recommendation - I will check it out. Tara

Chuck you should probably explain that the Getrag is the name of the transmission as well as the midlands. So Tara you should be looking for a Getrag from a MINI, they are better.
Can she put a 6 speed in? Or does it have to be 5 speed? -

Tara,
Is this an auto or 5 speed box? If you have a 2003 for sure you have the dear old 5 speed Midlands box which is famous for self destruction. If you go for the July 2004 onwards Ford Getrag box you will need to swap the flywheel, clutch , axles etc. The "S" box is stronger but a 6 speed and again you will need to swap the flywheel, clutch, axles etc. Ebay might have a used box.
