So last year during autocross I started experiencing a 2nd gear issue. During a hard or long sweeping turn 2nd gear would just be gone. The shifter is still in position. But power is gone. Take it out and try to put into gear and it grinds until the car slow a bit. Then goes into gear just fine. I even tried turning with one hand instead and the other holding the shifter to see if it'd stay in gear with mixed results.

I've tried a couple things. First was to change fluid. It was redline ATF. The fluid was a little metallic. Not a good sign. I put in Motul 75w140. The feel of the transmission improved, but the next AX it still did the same 2nd gear thing. The second was to replace the transmission mount, in hopes it was worn and allowing the transmission to travel too much when the vehicle is loaded in a turn. Well, like before, at the next AX it happened again.

As for regular driving it happened maybe twice. Both when going over a curb transition into a parking lot. And this isn't my Daily Driver anymore. So I've considered leaving it alone. But as time goes on it keeps bugging my brain.

Now the back story is done, here's the question. Does anyone sell a gear set for these transmissions? I haven't found anything in my brief searching. I can find used transmissions, but I'd prefer rebuilding with new gears, or even changing the gears to better suit my track / AX needs.

@Grizld700 I have not hade this problem on a Mini but it was common on the brands I use to work on as a mechanic.
On Alfas it was common for second gear to do this. What caused it was a broke tooth on the gear. This was usually accompanied with the second gear syncro going out. There were different reasons for the tooth barking, the syncro was because people would hold it in gear and wear out the syncro. Fiats X 1/9s it was revers. That was always because someone would push start it in revers.

I feel sure if there was metal in the oil your second gear is damaged.Having to slow a little to get it in gear sounds like your syncro is going. Time to rebuild

I dont know if a used transmission would be cheeper, it depends on what you have to replace in your transmission.
I would rather rebuild my transmission that way I would know it was strong.

See I'd prefer to rebuild. The problem I'm having however, I can't seem to locate replacement gear parts. My googling powers must be weak.

    Hey Griz,
Did you try Getrag Gears of North America? Haven't used them myself but they're in Newton, NC. Ph. 828-428-1591. Worth a call maybe.

I have a r56 and I lost power from 2nd gear also. I tried Fluid replacement, valve body from rev max and now I’m hoping it’s not the tranny but the connectors to the valve body. I really don’t want to shell out 9k to have this tranny replaced due to basically a whole engine drop.

Lol - you have a good point. The M5 transmissions (even the 88 with the “special” transmissions are not that much). The engine on the other hand.. that is expensive on the 88. The 03 isn’t that bad.. talking used that is, not new. :)
