Transport Canada is issuing a recall on defective and possibly-fire-inducing water pumps in MINI S's The auxiliary water pump is used to cool down the car's turbocharger once the car is off. It may fail and overheat, possibly starting a fire. About 6,409 MINI Coopers are affected in Canada, specifically the MINI Cooper S from model years 2007 through 2011; the MINI Cooper S Clubman from 2008 through 2011; the MINI Cooper S Convertible from 2009, 2010 and 2011; and the MINI Cooper S Countryman from model year 2011. All MINI John Cooper Works cars – the base, Clubman and Convertible – from model years 2009, 2010 and 2011 are also affected. If you own one of these cars, please park it outside until your auxiliary water pump has been replaced. Your dealer will perform the repair. Transport Canada Listing
:cornut: Mr Nathan Sir, (08 R56 MCS/JCW 6spd man)Any info on US models? My primary water pump went out/replaced several months ago by MINI. Also a computer module had to be replaced as the fan/coolant system wouldn't come on after the car was shut down and they replaced the thermostat also. So...............maybe my car already had that issue and they fixed it? Jason
I'm just reporting the news here. Have no idea what the US regulators are up to, there was nothing in article about that and the NHSTA site has nothing on MINI water pumps.. RealOEM doesn't list Canada, just US and Europe. I can't imagine there is a difference in a part like this between US and Canada. There does appear to be multiple part numbers for the water pumps depending on year.
Damn.... I have a 09 JCW......Now I gotta drive up North and have a MINI Canuck working on my car? That would be a Canadian of short stature...... Correct?
Actually, that's not entirely true. If you search the NHTSA database you'll find a defect investigation under the reference code of PE11036, although they are only extending their research up through the '08 model year. A large percentage of the complaints that stimulated this investigation either point to the fires originating somewhere under the oil filter or specifically to the aux water pump. There are eyewitness accounts in the NHTSA data of the electrical leads to the pump "glowing" red with over-current. Seems like what is good for the goose (Canada) ought to be good for the gander (U.S.). (Nothing implied by the association of waterfowl sex with country; I just really liked applying that idiom. :aureola
[Bitter Rant] Just opened in October. With the rate that the NHTSA investigates things we won't have a resolution until June. Most likely BMW will pay-off the right officials to keep quiet and say nothing is wrong. [/Bitter Rant]
