HPDâ€™s Extraordinary Pikes Peak P2 Plan (dailysportscar.com)

Hondaâ€™s grand expectations for its brand-new ARX-04b P2 chassis went unfulfilled during its lone outing at the Rolex 24 at Daytona. The curvy coupe was later found to have a few areas of development that would need to be resolved before returning to competition, and as Honda Performance Development vice president Steve Eriksen recently confirmed, there are tentative plans to improve the ARX-04b with an eye to making a return late in the IMSA TUDOR United SportsCar Championship season.

While the exact date for the carâ€™s next outing in IMSAâ€™s Prototype category might be unknown, Marshall Pruett has learned the ambitious folks at American Honda and Honda Performance Development have a firm date in June for the ARX-04bâ€™s next public performance.

How does 12.4 miles and 156 turns at the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb sound?

Details are fuzzy, but itâ€™s believed Honda could be targeting the outright record of 8:13.878 set by Sebastien Loeb in 2013 with the factory Peugeot 208 T16. The famed event and its treacherous run into Coloradoâ€™s clouds has been a staple for almost a century, and after the winding road was completely paved in 2012, bespoke road racing vehicles were given a new opportunity to participate in the race.

Without the need for high ride heights and other off-road modifications that kept low-slung open-wheel cars and sports prototypes from attempting runs up the mountain, the concept of taking a P2 car built for Le Mans and preparing it to compete at Pikes Peak became possible.

Loebâ€™s Peugeot, which was built specifically for the PPHIC, featured all-wheel-drive and claimed an output of 875hp from its twin-turbo V6 engine. The car also weighed in at 875kg.

To break Loebâ€™s record, Hondaâ€™s ARX-04b would need similar power â€“ something at or near 875hp, and with a P2 curb weight thatâ€™s already close to what Peugeot ran with the 208 T16, the only questions remaining involve the coupeâ€™s drive system and downforce.

Fitting the P2 coupe with AWD would add excessive weight, which makes the likelihood of racing with its native RWD far more practical. And while the Peugeot made use of a big splitter, ground effects, diffuser, and a massive rear wing, the ARX-04b would deliver much higher downforce figures in standard P2 trim. If the car were to receive bodywork and wing updates specifically for Pikes Peak, its lack of AWD could be mitigated by frightening cornering speeds.

Among auto manufacturers that are active in North America, Honda has embraced Pikes Peak more than any other in recent years, fielding a wide range of cars in numerous classes with American Honda employees, not to mention some of the professional drivers on its IndyCar and sports car roster. Itâ€™s also believed that while preparations for the Pikes Peak P2 project are under way, the final approvals required to go forward with its entry have yet to be received. Provided it receives the green light, fielding an unrestricted P2 coupe at Pikes Peak would represent one of the most exciting motor racing programs of 2015.

Reached for comment on Thursday, a Honda representative declined to speak about the project.

Falken Tire announces exit from TUDOR Championship (racer.com)

The popular Team Falken Tire Porsche program run by Walker Racing will conclude at the end of the 2015 TUDOR United SportsCar Championship.

“While we’re concluding what’s been a very valuable and rewarding relationship with IMSA and TUSCC after this season, we look forward to following – and cheering on – the continued growth of American sports car racing under the expert guidance of IMSA President Scott Atherton and his entire accomplished team,” said Richard Smallwood, Falken Tire president and CEO.

Team owner Derrick Walker told RACER last week the Indianapolis-based GT Le Mans program was up for review by Falken, and if the Japanese tire brand chose to wind down its effort, the veteran team would search for new sponsors to continue [click here for story].

Falken driver Bryan Sellers was understandably disappointed with the news.

“This is difficult,” he said. “It is leaving family. I don’t say that casually or as a figure of speech. Everyone at Falken Tire and Walker Racing has become my family over the last seven years. I am very grateful for the opportunity they presented to me in 2009 and I am excited to see this program through from start to finish. Over the course of my time as a Falken Tire driver, we have seen a great deal of success together. We have overcome a lot of obstacles and I think we proved a valuable resource to Falken, Porsche and the race organizers in that time.

“I cannot help but look back with pride and an appreciative heart. Thanks to everyone at Falken here in the States and in Japan. It doesn’t seem very long ago Dominic [Cicero, 2009 teammate] and I were rolling the Falken Tire Porsche out for the first practice at Long Beach. And it will be surreal to leave Road Atlanta knowing that will be my last ride with Wolf in the No. 17 Team Falken Tire Porsche 911 RSR. He is not only a teammate but one of my closest friends now as well. I know there will be a lot of tears when we leave the paddock that night but I cannot say enough about everyone involved. I hope we can add several more race wins to the Falken Tire tally before it is all said and done.”

Detroit race is this weekend. Here's the race broadcast info. Looks like I can watch the qualifying live on line but since I don't get Fox Sports 2 I'm out of luck on the race until they make it available on line later.

Track Worker Taken to Hospital after Post-Race Accident (sportscar365.com)

Two track workers are being evaluated following an accident on a wet, slippery track after the checkered flag in Saturdayâ€™s Chevrolet Sports Car Classic.

As of 2:50 p.m. ET, per IMSA, a track safety worker is in the infield care center being evaluated, and another track safety worker is going to a local hospital for evaluation.

As of 3:30 p.m. ET, IMSA confirmed the track safety worker taken to the infield care center had been evaluated and released.

Jan Heylen, who was one of four drivers in the GT Daytona class involved in the accident, has been evaluated and released from the infield care center.

The accident occurred after the checkered flag involving the No. 007 TRG-AMR Aston Martin V12 Vantage GT3, the No. 73 Park Place Motorsports Porsche 911 GT America, No. 58 Wright Motorsports Porsche 911 GT America and the No. 22 Alex Job Racing Porsche 911 GT America.

Heylenâ€™s No. 58 car was stopped on course in Turn 1, with less than two minutes remaining in the race, and a safety truck was on course to remove it.

As the conditions were wet and slippery heading into Turn 1, Davison lost control of his car following the checkered flag and hit the safety truck, with his left front of his car going underneath the truck, and lifting it off the ground.

Davison reported to Sportscar365 that he aquaplaned and was sore, but made it to the podium for podium ceremonies.

Alex Job also confirmed to Sportscar365 that Leh Keen, who was driving the No. 22 car, was also OK. Keen, per the team, crashed in Turn 1 just before the No. 007 car and safety truck.

Spencer Pumpelly, who was driving the No. 73 car, also slid off course into the accident. He wrote on Twitter, â€œI had a huge crash before start finish. Not sure if TV showed anything but the end of it. Iâ€™m fine. We finished 5th but the car is toast.â€

Ouch!

IMSA has been informed that the safety worker at a Detroit area hospital who was injured during Saturday's race is in stable condition.

The safety worker has a number of broken ribs, collapsed lung and a non-operative injury to his spleen and kidney.

When I saw they didn't go full course yellow with a car up against the wall I figured someone would get over there & hit it. But I didn't realize how bad it was going to be. Yikes I'm glad the corner worker survived. Damned lucky!

Seems to me any vehicle on track like that safety truck should have an crash attenuator on the back. Had that been an Indy car rather than an Aston it would have been most likely been a fatal hit.

This is disappointing, I wanted to see them continue to develop with the diesel. Smart, though, to get a jump on the necessary eventual transition, if that's why they're doing it.

Mazda's constantly evolving TUDOR United SportsCar Championship P2 program could take an interesting turn in the coming days as IMSA is expected to confirm the approved use of a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder turbocharged engine fueled by gasoline.

Mazda's current two-car Prototype program has been powered by its turbodiesel SKYACTIV engines, and with IMSA headed towards new ACO/FIA-based P2 rules in 2017 that bars diesel engines from the class, the Japanese brand's American sports car program appears to be getting a head start on switching to a new motor format.

"Mazda's constantly looking at our strategy on the current regulations, and I can't make any announcements, but we do have some exciting things coming," Mazda Motorsports boss John Doonan told RACER.

It's believed Mazda's gas turbo engine is a derivativeâ€”if not the exactâ€”motor used from 2007 through 2013 in the American Le Mans Series season (BELOW), albeit tuned to 2015 IMSA P2 power levels.

Mazda entered just one car at the most recent round at Detroit while committing the second chassis to a private testing program. It's unclear whether both of its P2 cars will carry SKYACTIV diesel engines for next weekend's six-hour race at Watkins Glen, or if a move to a gas powerplant will take place in at least one car.

I saw this one coming. It was said a while ago that Mazda diesels may not be here in 2016. Lots of money wasted developing those cars. Although they were far from being fully developed.

Mazda to run one gas, one diesel P2 at Watkins Glen (racer.com)

RACER has confirmed the Mazda Motorsports team will race in this weekend's Sahlen's Six Hours at the Glen with a gas-powered 2-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine in the No. 07 P2 entry, and the existing 2.2-liter turbodiesel 4-cylinder motor in the No. 70.

At present, the team is only able to confirm the split gas/diesel entry dynamic for Watkins Glen. It's unclear whether the team will convert both cars to gas engines for the four races after Watkins, or if diesel power will return for Canadian Tire Motorsport Park and beyond.
