A great tuner like Jan at RMW should and will take into account the mileage and overall health of the motor when tuning... Tis part of the pie.

Jan has gotten picky over the years--he once had a guy demand a xenon headlamp replacement because his burned out a few weeks after a tune; true story. So if you have a high mileage car, and you're realistic and have an idea what's going on, And most importantly test and prepare the engine properly, I suspect he'll tune it no problem. If you want your headlights tuned, I'll wager Jan will take a pass. On a street driven car, he's going to tune safety first, performance second, just like it should be. You'll still get a nice bump, but the car will be totally safe/reliable. For those of us idiots who want to push the envelope, he'll do that too, but only after he trusts you that you're taking care of the car properly, and you understand the risk, because every extra thing you ask for adds to it.
My car has been run hard, mostly track miles, and still runs fantastic. I get you want to build your own engine, but I seriously doubt you can do it better than Jan and his guys, just my .02. Seems the only people who have problems are the people who do the rebuilds themselves; get your engine in a crate from Jan, and no problems...-

Me > Stock tune, 15% pulley, JCW ehaust & JCW air intake. That is all I need for happiness. At the mileage my MINI has a tune seems foolish to me. Wish I'd done one years ago. If doing one it would be a Jan RMW tune. Hindsight is 20-20.
Jan has been doing these for so long & knows these cars so well that not having a dyno should be no problem.-

I know Nick and Jason both had their R53's done at the Dragon last year. For some reason I want to say that there is a point in mileage where Jan won't do the tune, so you might want to reach out to him before planning on getting it done.

I agree with Dick to a point--if it's just a street driven car, a street tune is fine, but if you're planning on tracking the car, you really need it tuned on a dyno. Any good dyno will work; Jan does remote tunes (My car was on a dyno in WI, he tuned it remotely from California), and it works out great, if the dragon isn't an option for you.

Mileage is not a factor to me, if it runs well then it can run better. If it blows up I'll rebuild it or replace it.
I've decided to wait for a tune until I build a new short lock and a big valve head.
I have the jcw tune on my laptop. I'm going to use that for now and dyno the new engine.
Jan sounds like the way to go for a non dynontune.
Thank you everyone.-

I know jan knows the cars but each car can differ.
For $350 it's a good deal. I may just install a jcw 210 tune myself and wait until I build the mountain motor to find a dyno.-

Have Jan do it. The pre set maps he has worked out over tuning hundreds or thousands of MINI's are pretty close from the start, then with the logs pulled from doing the street pulls the tune is as good if not better than tuning on a dyno. Street tuning often leaves better overall results than ones done on a dyno anyhow.

I'm pretty sure reputable tuners do not want to tune them for the simple reason when the engine does go blammo the tuner will be blamed even though they surely are not.

I was just saying that the tune itself is not really putting anymore stress on the engine, as opposed to the tuning.

My experience in the Subie world is that non-dyno tunes will give you a good, safe improvement. The dyno tune is for squeezing the most out of it, hopefully without it going boom.

I'm not knocking Jan, for my money he is the best. But I swear I was told that he considered the mileage & was hesitant to tune a high mileage engine. Maybe I was in a donut induced stupor when I heard that or maybe the fellow who told me that was. Either way, tune in, tune on & tune out.

I do believe it depends on the situation too. This particular MINI is owned by someone with mechanical sympathy, or at least can fix his own carp when he blows it up.

Jan RMW tune all day long.
He has all the maps for every mod combo you could possible do and you will only have to do a few pulls between the lower gas station and the top entrance of Fontana.
If you car needs something mechanical corrected (O2, MAP, T-MAP, Plugs) corrected you have many vendors to choose from.
