I was really worried about Memo. Matteo had spoken to his team after the crash but not a word about Memo or Matteo for many hours. I'm very relieved they are both awake & alert. Man that was a brutal crash.

"GAINSCO Bob Stallings Racing Team Statement: Memo Gidley, driver of the No. 99 GAINSCO/ Bob Stallings Racing Corvette DP, underwent surgical procedures on both his left arm and left leg last night at Halifax Health in Daytona Beach, Florida. Gidley also has an unstable fracture in his back which will require additional surgery before he can be released from the hospital. He continues to be evaluated.

IMSA statement: Matteo Malucelli remained at Halifax Health overnight for evaluation. He continues to rest comfortably. An update on his condition will be provided later today."

How can you make that incidental contact call on the last lap of the race. Between that call and the caution for debris in the track, this race looked a lot like a NASCRAP race.

IMSA: Gidley on the road to recovery, says Stallings (racer.com)

With a series full of close friends and supporters, the status of injured driver Memo Gidley has been at the forefront of the minds for those who witnessed the disturbing crash that temporarily halted last weekend's Rolex 24 at Daytona.

Gidley's No. 99 GAINSCO/Bob Stallings Racing Corvette DP hit the stalled No. 62 Risi Competizione Ferrari F458 of Matteo Malucelli at unabated speed, caving in the front of his chassis. The 40-year-old former open-wheel star was cut from the car and transported to the Halifax Health medical center in Daytona Beach, Fla., where he first underwent surgery on his broken left arm and leg.

In an update with team owner Bob Stallings Tuesday morning, the third major issue Gidley is facing, a lower back fracture, also underwent a successful surgical procedure.

â€œI'm still here at the hospital with Memo; he had surgery last night on his back which ended at about 11 o'clock last night,â€ Stallings told RACER. â€œI can't get into a lot of details, but the doctors were happy with how things went. He's resting now and they have some more things they'll need to take a look at probably later today. What I can assure you is he's getting the best medical attention possible at a great facility. His prospects for recovery are good.â€

Known as one of the most positive people in any paddock he visits, Stallings says Gidley has brought the same demeanor to his temporary paddock at Halifax.

â€œThat spirit is very clear here, constantly,â€ he noted. â€œWhenever somebody comes in to see him â€“ a doctor, a nurse, a friend â€“ invariably people ask how he's doing, and although he's slightly sedated, his automatic response is, â€˜I'm doing good; how are YOU doing?' It's just a natural extension of who he is and how big his heart is. We've gotten quite a kick out of that.â€

Following the accident that saw No. 99 GAINSCO Auto Insurance Corvette Daytona Prototype driver Memo Gidley suffer severe injuries at this yearâ€™s Rolex 24 At Daytona, GAINSCO/Bob Stallings Racings has elected to suspend operations for the balance of the 2014 season.

â€œIt is with great regret that we will have to suspend operations for the balance of the 2014 season,â€ said team owner Bob Stallings. â€œSince Daytona, priority one for us has been on Memoâ€™s recovery. Everyone on the team has been focused on his care and comfort, and it has meant the world to see such support from the fans and the racing community at large. Even though Memo has a long road ahead, the worst is behind him, and it has allowed us to step back and take a look at the program at large. With both the personal and economic strain this has put on us, we feel itâ€™s in the best interest of everyone to sit out this year, with a firm focus on a return in 2015.â€

With the team having a strong sense of family and community, the strain of Gidleyâ€™s recovery, combined with the destruction of the teamâ€™s primary vehicle and the financial requirements to continue in the Tequila PatrÃ³n North American Endurance Championship, the organization felt it was in the best interest to simply sit the year out. All drivers and crew have been released for opportunities available with other teams.

While the teamâ€™s famed No. 99 â€œRed Dragonâ€ will be absent this year, this will also position GAINSCO/Bob Stallings Racing to focus efforts on an improved 2015. With the 2014 season continuing to be an evolutionary year for the new series, the break will allow for the team to take an evaluatory look at their best options for next year.

GAINSCO/Bob Stallings Racing, as well as Bob Stallings personally, will continue to look after the recovery of Gidley, and the team will continue to provide updates during the Californianâ€™s recuperation.

New engine in the sport.

Honda is following Ford's lead and debuting the second twin-turbocharged V6 to be used by Daytona Prototypes in the United Sports Car Championship. The wait won't be long to see it on track because the new engine will debut with the Starworks Motorsport team in a Riley Gen3 prototype chassis at the 12 Hours of Sebring from March 12-15.

The new HR35TT engine is based on Honda's J35 production V6 found in a variety of its models, including the current Accord. The racing version benefits from dry sump lubrication, but is still similar to the production version with an aluminum block, direct injection and single overhead camshafts. It is fueled by 100-octane E10 fuel, but like many racing engines, exact power figures have not been released.

Starworks has had a close relationship with Honda since it won the LMP2 class at the 24 Hours of Le Mans and in the FIA World Endurance Championship in 2012 with a Honda Performance Development ARX-03b chassis and Honda engine. We can't wait to see this new mill hit the track, and see how it fairs against Chip Ganassi Racing's EcoBoost-powered Riley. Scroll down to read the press release for the full details.

Level 5 set for TUDOR Championship exit (racer.com)

Rolex 24 at Daytona GT Daytona class winners Level 5 Motorsports are set to exit the TUDOR United SportsCar Championship after a memorable result at Round 1.
RACER has learned the Scott Tucker-owned sports car team will not compete at the upcoming Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring, and is expected to formalize its departure from the TUDOR Championship this week.

Drivers Townsend Bell, Bill Sweedler, Jeff Segal and Alessandro Pier Guidi drove the No. 555 Ferrari F458 to the GTD win at Daytona after IMSA reversed a penalty on the final lap that initially awarded the victory to Flying Lizard Motorsports, and the sister No. 556 Ferrari piloted by team owner Scott Tucker, Mike LaMarra, Terry Borcheller and Guy Cosmo wasn't far behind, placing sixth in GTD.

"Scott Tucker gave me the authority to choose where we race this year, and I'm not here to throw stones, but I decided it's not in Level 5's best interest to move forward this season in the TUDOR Championship," Level 5 team manager David Stone told RACER. "We'll run some cars in the Ferrari Challenge series and have been approached by some people to run in the Pirelli World Challenge series, so we'll look at that; and there are numerous manufacturers that are building LMP2 coupes and that's a possibility.

"I've got two different OEM possibilities we're bidding on for 2014 that could be as simple as some test outings and could include doing some events in TUDOR. I've spoken with the series about that, and they said they'd be open to accommodating additional prototypes. So we're looking at all avenues for the team to go forward."

The move for the multiple ALMS class champions comes as a late surprise, but Bell and Sweedler, who've partnered since the 2012 ALMS season, appear to have a contingency plan in place.

As RACER reported late last year, Grand-Am Rolex GT champions AIM Autosport were close to fielding a standalone Ferrari GTD entry this season,but with that deal falling through, team principal Ian Willis appeared at the Rolex 24 working with Level 5 and could step in to run Bell and Sweedler for the remainder of the year.

"Bill Sweedler and Townsend Bell will likely join AIM, and we'll assist their program if that's what ends up happening," Stone confirmed. "AIM is who I recommended to Bill and Townsend to carry on with."
