Racer put up a long(ish) Q&A article, Marshall Pruett interviewing TUSCC CEO Ed Bennett. Looks like part 1 (of 2) in sort of a state of the union (merger). Click to read the full article. Here's the snip that interested me (page 3):
Some video from the Sebring test. Day 1 video is mostly interviews until about 5:45, Day 2 video is just cars on track. Interesting insights from the Sebring test. Page 1 below, full article here. INSIGHT: Sebring test lessons (Racer.com)
The Daytona test started today. Unfortunate results, at least no one was injured in either incident. Both Corvette DPs...hmmm..... :sosp: Barbosa Uninjured after Second Airborne Accident at Daytona (sportscar365.com) Here's the Spirit of Daytona car after its incident.
Combining these series and trying to adjust weights and power is going to make for some interesting events. I still don't like it?
They were both Corvette DPs using all the parts they could get at the time of the new DP aero package. But, like the article above says (page 3, linked in post #104), the full Corvette DP aero package hadn't been in the wind tunnel prior to hitting the track. After the Sebring test Barbosa said the downforce was biased to the rear and Bordais said of the AXR car "... with the team having to wait for more downforce-generating pieces to add to the front of the Coyote chassis, a few setup compromises had to be made." and "... there's nowhere near the aero we need on the front." The Corvette DP CoP (Center of Pressure) is rear-biased because they couldn't finish and supply all the new parts (or test them in the wind tunnel) before putting them on the track. They had setup issues at Sebring but at Daytona they use 90-95% of the NASCAR circuit and spend a lot of time at top speed on the high banked turns. Reminds me of the issues F1 had at Indi in 2005 when Michelin cars were having blowouts because they hadn't built tires capable of handling the load/track. Yes, I'm arm chair quarterbacking here, but I think the short time lines everyone has been complaining about (rightly so) may have finally caused some serious consequences. Imagine the outrage and backlash if someone had been hurt.
Just suspended testing. Those huge rear diffusers trap air under the cars when they spin around at that high speed and toss the car up in the air. Roof flaps like in NASCAR would go far in settling the cars back to earth.... Will be interesting to find why the tires were blowing out in the first place.....
Westbrook says "I Just Can’t Believe That I Walked Away From It" - must have been a crazy incident. Hope to find some video soon. Apparently that's Darren Turner, happy to see he's ok. Must have stopped his car on track to check on him?
That's a hell of a picture. Apparently Darren Turner is very happy to have found Westbrook alive & well.
Turner is running the same Z4-GTE that RLL ran last year? Um no, I was schooled. The RLL car meets the GTE rules, the Turner car is a GT3s version of the Z4.
The GTEs were brought over strictly for ALMS after the GT3s had been run in Europe for a while. The GTE has a much blockier aero setup as it had to work within the ALMS rules. IMHO, the GT3 is a much sexier car. Now that USCC has come along, the rules have opened up and allowed the GT3s to come in as well. It'll be interesting to see how the rules handle them as the European version of the GT3s were faster cars compared to the GTE under ALMS regulations. At the end of last season Rahal and the team were really hoping they'd open up the restrictors on the GTEs because they couldn't keep up on the straights with the rest of the field. I'm looking forward to next year's season. We'll be out there with BMW again and it'll be great to be able to work along side Turner and some of the other companies now that we're all under one series. Should be a blast.
