You may want to try changing the fuel filter. They say lifetime, however they really are not. Mine ('05 R53) was desperately in need of changing at 62,000 miles... It's under the rear seat on the passenger's side.

Chris to make sure you two are understanding each other. He means put the down stream O2 where the up stream is and the up stream where the down stream is. Not buy new ones. :biggrin5:

I would take off the intake and use some good carb cleaner.

yes, I'm sitting here, thinking what they are doing to it. Just having the body shell repaired presented a ton of little issues to fix.

Regarding Total: I'm still active on that issue. I emailed their boss in France about the appalling customer service so I hope there will be some come back. Also the media here have some interest based on other incidents. I doubt they will do the right thing but if they get some hassle like I did that will be enough.

I'd be drinking more than working without experiencing any positive results! You're a better man than most...

If I were you I would go ahead and replace the guides at the same time. You can buy the whole timing chain set as a kit for the "S" and I assume you can do the same for a "Justa" as well. 130K! Yeah, you probably need a new one.

So I have to work today so no work on the Mini but I did get something done last night. You can see my Vee tensioner puller tool, a little bit of metal to take off the hub bolt. The chain 2 gold links are in the correct position at the bottom but the single gold link is nowhere close to the top mark! And the tensioner piston is fully out.

hahaha you know how it rains here. So frustrating seeing it has not rained until I got the new chain.... like the chain to flush the toilet! HAHAHA

Steve , That will be the first thing I will do . I'm really interested in comparing both chains because this will be valuable information for other high mileage engines if this is the problem. That's why I'm covering everything I've done due to the strange error.

in the dark and 10,000 mosquito's! LOL The set up is so romantic with the citronella candles burning and UK dance music playing in the background. I hope tonight to finish the job and start the engine.

I assume at this point you're not surprised.

You did all the right things. You could have jumped to the conclusion you needed a new ECU early on but first you tested and tried things you could deal with yourself, just in case it was a lesser problem. You learned a lot and fixed some things along the way.

I have to say, I would think the dealer should have the ability to do the same sort of direct diagnostic on an ECU. I guess that's beyond the typical service department, eh?

On the plus side, at least now you know what needs to be fixed.

I've never heard of rebuilding an ECU, thought unit replacement was the only option.

That also may give you clues if there were any electrical problems that fried it.

Just make sure you don't let the smoke out of this one. Main cause of electrical problems is letting all the smoke leak out. :D

Yes good news on the electrics! Phew. I was hoping they could tell me hope the file got corrupted after 3 years of use. They said it was getting hot so maybe the hot weather has some impact? anyway I'll fit the ECU and see if the performance and driving is drastically different.
