Picked up my R56 Hardtop and one of my first modifications will be an intake for sound and the modest response/power benefits.

It appears that there are two full kits: the DDM and the VIP. Does anyone have anything to say about the VIP intake? It doesnt have the shield that the DDM does, but it is $50 cheaper.

    Thanks

    Welcome to M/A :)

What flavor of MINI do you have? An S or a Justa? I'm sure someone will chime in here & give you an answer. My MINI is a bit older so I don't have experience with R56 mods.

I've used both on a "justa". Will be happy to give you my views when I know which type MINI you have.

I have been contemplating the same thing for my Countryman. I had the DDM on my R53 and loved the sealed box but the design is different on the CM. I am leaning towards the VIP, but is the shield worth the extra $$?

Hey guys! It's a Justa. I used to have an R53 but went the naturally aspirated route this time. Look forward to hearing your thoughts on the VIP and DDM!

Throttle response and performance was the same with both.

DDM: Very loud (nice around home, but drove me nuts on the nine hour drive to MOTD), intake air temp ranged from 30 to 35 above ambient.

VIP: Nice growl (not overbearing), intake air temp remains steady at 20 above ambient.

The loudness factor and intake air temp are the only diffidences I found between the two. I am running the VIP.

Thanks for the explanation. Why does the DDM have the 'box' and the VIP does not? Just curious.

The DDM (these are my words) is a "shielded, open cone" intake. The box is completely open on the back and bottom. The Cone shaped, K&N air filter is in there. The box is suppose to shied the filter from hot air and the open section lets it draw cooler air from the area near the fire wall.

The VIP gets is throttle response, simply form a K&N free flow filter in the stock air box. The tube bypasses the silencer and give the growl.

I found no diffidence in response from either one. They both "DID" give the same amount and you "CAN" feel it.

I think we are talking about different VIP intakes. The one I am looking at/contemplating is the 'louder' version they have on their website. Looks like it is very much like the DDM intake but for the 'box'.

Ya got me there. Their web site seems to be down right now, so I can't look. Are you sure it is for the R56 Justa? In the past, there was only one type for the justa, consisting of a K&N filter and a red tube, which replaced the silencer.

Installed DDM today, nice package. Very loud though. Fine when maintaining speed and decelerating, but even mild acceleration is quite loud. Hard acceleration sounds almost as if I installed an exhaust on the car.

No noticeable difference in power or throttle response.

Update: i now have a DDM intake (1 day old) for sale. Too loud for me. Let me know if you want it. I'll sell it for $175 shipped.

Installed the DDM on my R60 and really don't think it is too loud? I guess it has to do more with personal preference. Personally, I love hearing the turbo spool and blow off valve.

You have an "S". We have justa's. Big difference, as in apples and oranges.
