So I'm taking my carb apart and measuring things for a K&N air filter but I have a problem... The carb I have LOOKS like a HIF-style unit (flat-bottomed with throttle and choke levers predominantly on the side of the body, etc.) but when I measured the main air intake opening it's precise 1 3/8" and NOT the 1 1/4" or 1 3/4" offered in either of these two units: HIF6 (1 3/4" opening): HIF6 HIF44 REBUILT CARB INLET MANIFOLD W/LINKAGE 1 - Classic Mini Cooper HIF38/HIF4 (1 1/4" opening): 1 1/2 HIF38 HIF4 SU REBUILT CARB INC. MANIFOLD & F - Classic Mini Cooper So far I've tried three different units from K&N and NONE fit, and I'm starting to wonder if someone bolted a non-Mini carb onto my car when they converted it from SPI. Any ideas??? PS - this is the only identifying mark I can find on the unit - this is inside the top pot assembly: There's also a "06" (or maybe a "90") cast into the side of the main body.
The opening where the SU mounts to the intake manifold. Did you know SU stands for Seemingly Useless. Not really, just one of the many Brit car jokes I've heard over the years.
It's a 1.5" then, measuring the OUTPUT side. My car's lack of pick-up is now explained. Now the question is: Can I find a proper 1.75" unit without having to sell a kidney?
UPDATE: It's the HIF38, almost certainly. I'm pondering switching this this one... HIF6 Carb Assembly, Rebuilt (SEVR0001) - Seven Mini Parts MiniMania has one for half the cost, but with no intake manifold, air cleaner or anything else: http://www.minimania.com/web/Item/FZX1280%2FREB/InvDetail.cfm
Seven's rebuilt set is a fair deal. And I mentioned on your other thread that I have a used LCB exhaust.....
Take the Number from the carb (eg.HS2) & put that number over 8 = 2/8 . Lowest common denominator of that is 1/4. Add this fraction to 1 & bingo you have the internal measurement. HS2 = 1+2/8 = 1 1/4", HS4 =1+4/8 = 1 1/2", HS6 = 1+6/8 = 1 3/4" etc Similarly the HIF range are quite easy to figure out HIF38 = 38mm. 1" = 25.4mm. Therefore 38/25.4 = 1.49" or 1 1/2".
