Yikes! Good thing you were around to deal with it. You should probably visit your doctor about the smoke inhalation.

Yea it was pretty crazy... few more minutes and the fire would have gotten out of control. Still smells like burned plastic.. :(

Regarding the doc - good point. Will check to see if anything I need to do.. more about the fact it was plastic and lipo battery... sure that’s not good for you. :Nailbiting:

Had to take the door lock actuator out. Suddenly didn't want to work anymore. Couldn't open the door from the outside or use the remote to lock and unlock it. Good now

Wow. Did you happen to be in the garage when it happened? I probably wouldn't know what happened until it was too late.

Damn Sully. I'm glad you caught it before it got out of control. Glad no one was injured and agree with others that you should get checked out. No telling what you were inhaling.

Thanks - was super lucky for sure. Worked on cleaning it up last night (with respirator on).. Needless to say, I’m going through and looking at everything that has batteries and also looking into a “fire box” for the batteries. That wall is the wall to the kitchen and right above that are where my boys sleep.. Couldn’t be more thankful that I was up late that night working (on the site no less). Going to be installing a hard wired fire alarm in the garage this weekend.

What was the battery for? And was it being charged?

Its was a headlamp like you wear when mountain biking at night or working at night and need your hands free. I was also charging, which ultimately means the failsafe for over charging did not work.

As a pro-photographer, I have a lot of Lithium-Ion batteries. I have to cover the contacts and have them in my carry-on bag to go on a plane. They will be confiscated if they are found in my checked baggage.

I also have a lot of power tools that use L-Ion batteries. My garage is separate from my house, but my MINI lives there.

Having read about your experience, I should probably not charge those batteries while I sleep, or when I'm not at home.

From what I understand the scary reality is Lithium-Ion (LiPO) batteries are unstable when either charged or discharged beyond what they are designed for. Most RC cars and drones use LiPo. Essentially its the fail safes that help with over charging and the manufacture who sets the “min” limit. The best “way” to deal with them is in a seperate structure and a fire safe (one that keeps the fire inside).. LiPo doesn’t need oxygen to burn (another scary thing). The battery itself is the fuel source, oxygen just makes it more power full. Here is a decent thread that explains it. I have some older ones when my boys were getting into RC cars I would have to find. All the RC car stuff is outside in seperate structure. But frankly we forget that many batteries are now LiPo. For example some fire alarms use LiPo batteries.. which seems a little bit like an oxymoron. But all our cell phone, laptop etc.. also use LiPo. If the fail safes are in place and working, your good. As soon as a “fail safe” fails.. your bad. Which appears to be what happened to me.

If I understand this forum correct, its post 518 on this topic. This response explains some of the chemistry behind it...

They have come a long way. I use to fly a airplane that had a section on the floor under the battery designed to melt and let the battery drop out the bottom incase of a thermal runaway. We are one of the only carriers that carry Haz on an airplane. If those batteries catch fire we have very little time to get on the ground. The best thing to do is never ever buy cheap batteries. their is a reason they are cheap.

Still chasing down that P2188 (system too rich at idle) intermittent code. Trying the olde Seafoam treatment, and cleaned the MAF. Just need to burn fuel and oil for a bit to see if it works.
