My tire expert tells me they still wear faster in the summer due to the tire compound being tailored more for cold weather, but the they work better so you can delay your change over. I guess if your car is a daily drive and you don't drive all that aggressively, they should be okay. My daughter's winter tires are just a bit narrower than her summer tires, though the wheel diameters are the same. So she will be switching back to her summer tires in the spring. However, she can delay that until whenever she feels like it, I guess. As for me, my winter tires are on 15" wheels and they are narrower 195's as opposed to the 17" summer wheels, lower profile and wider tires. My changeover doesn't bother me, because it gives me an excuse to rotate my tires. This discussion should really be in the tire forum n'est pas? I will repost the pix on the tire forum.
I had good results in the past with all-season tires in snow. However, they were all Audis with quattro. My MINI has not experienced snow -- and hopefully won't. CD
Thanks for the reply beken. Time will tell if those tires are all that & a bag of chips. I'm an advocate of narrow snow tires, they just work better. We have a tire forum???
Summer tires/wheels in the summer and most of the spring and fall. Much better than All Seasons. Winter tires/wheels in the winter and some of the late fall and early spring. Much better than All Seasons.
Drove home from work behind sub-10mph pickup trucks driving at 45 degree angles most of the time. I had absolutely no trouble with full tread new winter tires.
Well, how about that? The day after I put on my snow tires, it warms up to +10c and rains. and there is no tire forum on this site. How about that? I thought there was one. I hate shopping for tires because they are the most subjective thing to shop for on a car. Even within a particular brand, each tire handles differently.
Have several inches of white fluffy stuff now, may get several more before it turns to rain about supper time.
I love obsessing about which tires will be next when the current ones wear out. My current summer Pilot Sport 4S ones will be a tough act to follow, so will get them again unless they stop making them in my size or if something even better comes along a couple/few years from now.
We had freezing rain this morning. I decided to take Babs clubster out & test the Michelin IceX 3 tires. Man they really worked well to & from the grocery store. Sure was nice having the roads & store all to myself. It was snowing a bit on the way home. Tonight they are calling for more freezing rain. That's OK I have food & beer.
I’ve have Ice-x xi3 s on both our cars, as well as my previous MINI, after having Blizzard, Yokos, and other winter tires including studded in years past. The Michelins are almost as good in snow and ice as the Blizzaks but significantly better on dry cold roads.
Good to know. I've had experience with a few sets of Blizzak's & I like them. What I don't like is once the unicorn rubber wears they really do suck. My favorite snow tires were a set of Hakka 10's I had on my MINI. Trouble is Hakka's are hard to find in my local area. I ended up with the Michelin's because a friend was selling them already mounted on MINI wheels. Justa too good of a deal to pass up. The old wheels with Blizzak WS70's were passed onto a friend.
Yeah ABC said we would only getting a dusting to an inch. We got at least 5 inches so acourding to ABC I am hung like a horse.
Yesterday I was forced into one of those plastic white road barriers by a semi who needed to get over real quick. It sounded WAY worse than it looks. Not too much damage, and with some of Dave.0's wet sanding and polishing tips I got all the scuffs and rubs out and it's nice and shiny, but it looks a tad wrinkly with a nice crease along the bottom edge of the door. Instead of going thru insurance and all that crap I ordered a Clubby door (thumb below) from ebay for $400 shipped. It's complete minus the mirror and door trim. So, it was an eventful ride home but with the traffic flying around I decided to stay on the road. I did make sure to let the truck driver know I wasn't happy with his driving practices and went on with my day.
You guy's can have that snow tires think. I live in Calif and other than the fires (about 200 miles away) the weather is fine. In the 60's.
The other night when I got back from south america I found white powder all over the Helmet (the kind U.S. Customs doesn't care about) .......I am not ready for winter. It looks like the guy parked next to me isn't either.
