I buy Gillette disposable razors by the box of 50 from Costco for $25. They work great and their cheap!

 

For those "Gee...I ought to shave today" days a Dollar Shave Club 4x in the shower.

When I want a good shave the Merkur 43C handle with Feather blades is used. The whole nine yards...a warm moist towel first, then some hipster made shaving oil my barber peddles, Barbasol (made here in Ohio) shave cream, followed by a generous splash of some Bay Rum.

Get yourself a variety pack of blades to experiment with. I'm partial to Feather, but beware, some say they are really really sharp. My leathered face is fine with them.

Harry's is very good for what it is--good price, very good blades, their shaving cream is awesome, but I use Nivea for aftershave. Harry's btw has much better blades than dollar shave club. Their shaver is nice too, but I'll probably splurge on their metal handle.

It's not in the same league as what Nate's talking about, but that's overkill for me.

On the other hand, having everything delivered when you need it is pretty nice..

 

Years ago I switched to a double edge, and thought I'd found bliss. Then I switched to straights and knew I had.

 

I use whatever's handy at the moment.

For me the secret is a combination of what you shave with, and where you shave.

I use Gillette Fusion blades, and I shave in the shower. When I built my house, I had a large shower built in the master bath. It has a mirror in it. I use RainX to keep the mirror fog free. The last thing I do when I shower is shave, because my skin and beard are completely hydrated. Because of that, I don't need shaving cream, just some soap. Smooth shave, and no irritation at all.

I was at the Camelback Resort and Spa in Scottsdale, and one of the spa attendants told me to try shaving in the steam sauna, which had a sink and mirror in it, after a good steam. That's where I got the idea to shave in the shower. I only shave at a sink when I have to.

Sitting in a bar in Sasebo many years ago I watch a young man, bar tender, use a couple of coins between his fingers like tweezers, pluck out chin and cheek hairs much like a girl plucking out eyebrows. Some sights burn themselves into memory whether you want them there or not.

 

I prefer a good wax.

Edge shave gel for sensitive skin (otherwise ingrown hairs like a mother!) and a Gillette Mach 5.

 

I use a Merkur 43C also but with Merkur blades. I use Creamo shave cream it does a great job and has just about eliminated ingrown hairs. I too shave in the shower. It's harder to do in a hotel. With being almost bald I have a lot to shave.
