Yes, No bells and whistles, just an adventure to drive. Any car of this vintage, be it an MG or a TR , Austin Healey. It does not have to be a great looker but it has to be an adventure, plane and simple. Pure driving experience.
A late 80's 911 "Turbo Look". It has the wide body, brakes, wheels & tires and whale tail of the Turbo, but has the normally aspirated engine. Red over tan leather with A/C if I get to be picky. or a Red/Union Jack Sportpack Classic Mini with 4 driving lights and bonnet stripes and a strong 1380. Anyone with a good job could have both...
I had already gotten my wife's nod of approval for a new Cayman when we decided, on a whim, to try out the MINI. I'm sure glad we did. I recall reading a comment from a member who previously owned a 911: "The Mini is 8/10ths the fun for 2/10ths the cost". After owning my Mini for over a year I still believe that just as strongly as ever.
Really like the idea of owning a classic Morgan. This is tempered by the realization that I likely wouldn't fit (which tends to be the case more often than not for cars on my "list.") All the more reason I love my Mini.
I could have bought a Cayman for what I have in the MINI at this point. But, otherwise, I think your statement holds. :cornut:
Your MINI will be quite a bit faster than a stock Cayman when it's all said and done. You'd have to get into a Cayman S to make it interesting.
Funny, for a long time, it was the GP. I'd love a Cayman GTS with a stick, though. I think that'd be the ultimate end-all-be-all liveable sportscar. The GT4 is simply too hard to get - the waitlists are 10 deep at my dealership.
Lotus Extige 260S in black for me. Should have bought one 2 years ago before the going price escalated 20 grand!
At the moment, Jaguar F-Type S tops the list. Also on the short list is Lotus Exige S, Cayman GTS, and BMW 1M.
So many choices NSX, 280Z, early 70s euro Capri, 32 Ford Coupe Hot Rod, Eleanor, Ford Escort RS Cosworth,... Like Eric, as soon as I would get one I'd be thinking about the next one. I found it's an ADD thing. The anticipation is better than the having.
This morning I want to add a Morgan 3. It would be a great ride to have today or any fine day. So many cars so little time. I should have bought that C type Jag I was offered for $2,000 back in 1968. The one that got away. On my.....
Okay. Now that we have slobbered all over our keyboards, we come to step two. Which one of you knuckleheads is actually going to be the one to ruin their domestic life and pull the trigger. I suggest we do a kickstarter for the person who shows 1) the most passions for their 'IT' car, and 2) demonstrates how badly it would ruin their life. Who's in?
I was thinking on my drive in to work this morning that the Morgan 3 or a Catered Ham would be a much more impractical purchase and more likely to meet Eric's 40% chance of ending my marriage!
If I had the money to spare to buy a '67 Tiger, I honestly don't think that my wife would be against it. She is very much the type that would say "you work hard, you get it". However, being the only wage earner in the house, and 2 boys to put thru college, my "toys" will have to wait a few years. Also, finding a good '06 R53 (in Chili Red), and a Triumph America are probably more realistic targets for me.
