    SPECIAL TO THE STAR

For a recent trip north, I took a 2011 Mini Cooper S. The last time I drove one was three years ago; though cars change each model year, I specifically knew this was the car I wanted. I would be driving to Killarney, Ont. At night. And home again, at night.

As you head north, everything changes. You’re far less likely to find road rage on roads where you are the only driver. You are likely, however, to find wildlife, a constantly changing topography, and no streetlights. The final two hours of my five hour trip would be in isolated darkness.

Why the Mini? In a word, handling. The suspension on this car is tight. On longer trips, this means you will usually feel it settle into your shoulders. Large, luxury vehicles are lovely, but I wanted a car that required every inch of my concentration, and one that would respond in kind.
