There are a couple of side impact sensors. One is physically in the door, up high below the side view mirror. The other is just behind the shoulder belt winder.

I think that's a pretty safe bet. At least for R52s. I know R53s pretty well, too.

Guess I better disconnect the battery before replacing the sensor. Just in case...

YES always disconnect the battery when "playing" with the airbag system.
If you remove the interior door panel and shine a light up in the front part of the door cavity, you should see the sensor up there. -
Suggest having a beer after disconnecting the battery to allow the vehicle airbag capacitors to discharge completely before tearing into things. :beer
