So guy's & gals, with my latest project starting, I'm replacing my 03 tranny with a 05 closer ratio box. So I am in the market for a clutch/flywheel combo. To all the guys I have already talked to about this, don't worry, I'm just wanting to get as many opinions as possible. So since I am way over power than stock, and always looking for more....LOL, I need something more substantial than stock. I have been checking out the Clutchmaster FX400 and the Spec 2 combos. Please feel free to give your opinions and experiences with any of these or something else. Thanks :cornut:
If I was doing a clutch replacement right now I would go with the OS Giken. It is much more more expensive than CM FX400 setup but if I was going through the hassle of doing a clutch on the Mini I would be willing to pay more for the clutch.
While it will leave a hole in your pocket I've heard nothing but great things from people with the OS Giken and plan on it being my replacement when needed........if I got the bucks.lol
OS Giken all the WAY. They are the best. If you want a clutchmaster I have a customer that is selling his that you could get a great deal on.
Thanks for the responses guys. I just don't see me having the funds for the OC Giken right now. This project is already at $1400. for the tranny, still needing the clutch and LSD. I have a LSD in mind thanks to Lynn that will save some funds. Chase, how are you liking the FX400? Is it as noisy as some say? Has it quieted down as you used it? Not that it really matters, my car is quite loud already  How do you like the feel? Has anyone ever kept the OEM flywheel and just replaced the clutch? How long is a FX400 supposed to last?
I had both the Spec and the OS Giken and I gotta say its like night and day. The Spec rattled so much at times it sounded as if there was can of marbles under the hood. With the Giken the rattle is long gone. The throwout bearing is so much nicer as well being a real bearing as opposed to whatever the Spec used. Much easier to modulate and less pedal force too. Go Giken and don't look back, it is so worth the extra funds.
I did the same thing as you are doing right now. I liked the OS but the price is crazy I went with the ACT flywheel and SS clutch kit. I used redline lightweight shock proof oil and have noise what so ever. You will love the difference in gear ratios. Are you putting in an lsd in?
So does anybody know how to decipher the Clutchmaster model numbers? They have these on their website, they are all the stage 4. 1. 4 / 03-050-HDCB4-R 2. 4 / 03-050-HDCB4-S 3. 4 / 03-050-HDCB6-R 4. 4 / 03-050-HDCB6-S The last letter, either R or S designates I think what flywheel you are using? And which puck do we use on our cars? 4 or 6? Any help is appreciated
The OS Giken is definately a nice clutch but be prepared to spend 2K + installed, that is some serious cabbage. Tell me this..at what HP does a OEM clutch become ineffective ? I have been told you have to be laying down some serious power before considering something else.
I am Just not in the position to spend $2 grand for a clutch combo. Have been told that anything over 210-230 whp you need a stage 3-4 clutch. Plus you never know when you may add nitrous :arf: Concerning the Clutchmaster, was also told to go with the stage 4 for longevity.
The 6 puck is what has been recommended to me for fast road use in a daily driver. The R and S define whether it's sprung or not. A breakdown of the code can be found here. Clutch Masters- Your High Performance Specialists
I still recommend the OS Giken. If you want the clutchmaster here is a good used flywheel I have. Used Clutch Master Flywheel R53 - Way Motor Works
Oh I would love to try the OS Giken.......:arf: Whats the deal on the Flywheel? How used? Wear on the gears?
The Flywheel was in a customer car for about a year, no wear on the ring gear. The customer ended up getting an LSD, and wanted to do the OS Giken clutch at the same time cause it was already out.
