    France never actually gained independence in the true meaning it has really always been independent? If you are referring to Bastille Day 1789 then I suppose it is how you interpret it. If you review French history it was simply an entity since before Christ. Never a colony like the US so that in itself would mean no independence day? Also exploring Frances colorful history you would find that France has been occupied several times by foreign armies like the British and the Germans (naming 2) and then later liberated.. So if you call those liberation from foreign occupations independence perhaps a re write of French history is in order? lol
    And the French came to America in the 1500s as I posted long before the settlements you are referring to.
