The reason is that that is not a "new post" to you. Being it was created by you it would not show in new posts until someone replies. Then it would have a "new post" in it and show back on your own New Post search results.
Might I recommend that to keep track of your thread or other threads that you want to track is to use the subscribe feature. Please see http://www.motoringalliance.com/forums/how-do-i/529-email-alerts-how-do-i-subscribe-thread-receive-e-mail-alerts.html for directions on how to subscribe to a thread. -
But when I reply to it, shouldn't that give it a "bump"?

To see it after you post, go to "Today's Posts". It's sort of "self cleaning" and never really goes away. Unless it steps "out of bounds", so to speak, or gets hit by the "great debacle" -

Hey.... No problem.....
See, it posted again. -
But, after it was explained to me I understood it. In my mind it doesn't make sense, but at least I now understand it.

I've edited the title of this thread to be a little more specific.
This is how New Posts works.
You create a new thread or post, being it is your own it does not show in your own New Posts listing as it is not new to you. However, everyone else now see's it in when they search New Posts.
People read the thread/post and the post no longer shows on their own New Post listing.
Another person adds a post to the thread. That person will not see it as New, but everyone else will now have that post listed in the New Posts listing, until they read the post, then it will go away in the individuals search results.
The cycle continues....
