This thread has the details about interchangeability - but, yes, you can make either one work in either model car. But that doesn't mean the fit is perfect - they are a *bit* different in dimension.

We just got a used 2nd gen screen for our 1st gen car, mounts exactly the same. Only difference between them is, the second gen rear seats have a bigger middle bolstering, so the windscreen accounts for that, it opens up just a bit. The first gen screen is flat all the way across. So, when using the 2nd gen screen on a 1st gen car, there is a small gap that allows a tiny bit of air in. Now, since my wife has really long and wispy hair she is extra sensitive about wind, since we added the screen, no wind at all, don't even notice the little bit allowed by the gap. With all the windows up and top down, almost like having the top up

Would definitely order correct deflector for you Mini. Just got a deflector for my 07 convertible and love it. Snaps into place perfectly with no sag or stretch.
