We just went ahead and put Win 10 on everything......it's no biggy for us casual users. Even my cell phone is Win 10 now (yes, I have finally graduated to a "Smart" phone - I'm not so sure how smart it was to do this, but I digress....)
Not cool, Mr Softy! I've gone to Win10 and I'm glad I did but if you're a hold-out I'm sure you'll not be happy if Win10 suddenly happens, out of the blue. At least there are a few ways to avoid it. You'll find a couple of those below or, if you're comfortable with it, you could just follow Nathan's advice (2 posts above ^ ). Windows 7 users complain of unprovoked Windows 10 auto-upgrades (pcworld.com)
My PC with Windows 7 is having major problems and will not load updates without shutting down for days. this is the first I have been online in days and even though a repair guy will eventually come over, it might be time to look for a new computer even though this is a slightly used 4 year old one. I cannot chance getting windows 10 if this PC won't even do the windows 7 updates, so I guess I'm screwed.
WMWNY...Have you tried booting into safe mode and then upgrading. NOTE---this is coming from a guy that has screwed up more computers than he cares to remember...or can remember.
I've tried everything...even got an on-site repair and they can't even get this PC to work regularly, so they want to send out a tech to physically fix it. Last nite, after being offline for the last 3 days, I turned on the PC before going to bed just to see if it would start. It went thru all the mierda about not doing the updates and then resumed redoing ALL the Windows, so I went to bed. When I got up this morning, it was back to "normal" and so, I am "here"...at least for today. I'm afraid to shut it down, for fear that it will return to its "off" mode again, and I am also afraid to let it "rest/sleep", for the same reason. I think today might be a good day to start looking around for another PC... But then, a new PC will have Microsoft's "wunnerful" new OS to further complicate my life...:frown2: I have enjoyed Windows 7, but I'm losing faith with this PC's refusal to update these days. :mad2:
Weird... I have Windows 7.... I refuse to go with Windows 10... And I successfully update 7 on a weekly basis...
I'm running 7 & have no problems with getting updates. I am a bit worried that MS will slip a Win 10 upgrade in while I'm not looking. I plan to stay with 7 until this box of wires croaks. Only then will I move to Win 10, but may move to Mac & cheese.
I believe if you have the correct buttons pushed on "Windows Update" you shouldn't have Windows 10 accidentally loaded...
Exactly...until they change tactics again. For now, it's all about the Recommended Updates check box. Now they've reclassified the Win10 upgrade as a "recommended" update, it will load automatically if you have that box checked. Then the only way to avoid having to roll back to your previous version of the OS (assuming that's still an option) is to:
I have some business programs that are not compatible with Windows 10... I may need to go "Full Rambo" and cut all ties with Windows at the shop...
I have Windows 10 on all my computers now, I like it. It is not that different from Windows 7. I found this on the web, Like Windows 7, Windows 10 does have “compatibility mode†options that trick applications into thinking they’re running on older versions of Windows. Many older Windows desktop programs will run fine when using this mode, even if they wouldn’t otherwise. Windows 10 will automatically enable compatibility options if it detects an application that needs them, but you can also enable these compatibility options by right-clicking an application’s .exe file or shortcut, selecting Properties, clicking the Compatibility tab, and selecting a version of Windows the program worked properly on. If you’re not sure what the problem is, the “compatibility troubleshooter†can walk you through choosing optimal settings.
Here's a link to instructions on how to lock the door to the MS invasion. I even have the pull down on the update page set to 'Never check for updates...' How to stop Microsoft from gathering telemetry data from Windows 7, 8, and 8.1 - Super User
Duplicated somehow. 1st time the screen came up 'page not found' so I redid it and got on twice. I miss my TRS80....
Ever since XP auto updated and knocked my computer out for days I keep auto updates turned off. When a service pack comes out I manually run it. I have 7 on everything. My sons upgraded their laptops to 10 and have reported any problems yet. So we'll see. Kind of makes you wounder though why MS is giving away 10 when they charged for every OS up till now.
I think it had to do with how horrid Windows 8 was. Try to win customers back or something. I'll say since switching to windows 10 from 8 it's like a dream come true. Its like having old windows back. That being said, outside of work I had windows XP prior to 8. And I don't really do anything on the computer really. Manage music, movies, bills, forums. Just low key stuff. Nothing like photo editing or gaming.
Win 10 isn't actually free unless you upgrade from an earlier version. If you're starting from scratch, either buying something with the OS loaded or building a new rig and need a copy of the latest OS, you'll pay for it. That's also a limited time offer. If you figure you'll eventually need to upgrade a current machine to 10, you'll need to balance the desire to avoid using it for as long as possible with the cost (I think roughly $120) to switch after the free deal expires one year from when Win 10 launched. Yup, win back favor with something better and increase the market share running on their latest version. But there are more similarities with 7 than you'd expect and it's less hated so the push to get people to move on from 7 is more about their efforts to get everyone using their cloudy new system that they're sure you'll love so much you'll wonder why you stuck with 7 so long. Well, there's more to it than that but that's the central theme. If you don't want to use the cloud-based app integration and syncing with Win 10, you don't have to hook any of that up. I don't and I still like 10 much more than 8 or even 8.1, no idea how it compares to 7.
