if this is a first gen car it sounds like a failing body control module....

Sounds like something is going on in the steering column where the switches converge. I'd pull the wheel and take a look at the connections in the column.

Sorry for the delay, just getting used to the site. Our Mini is a 2008 without the turbo.
Since my last posting I have tried disconnecting the battery in the hope of resetting the computer. Upon reconnecting the batt. the wipers cam on and would not respond to the control switch, front rear or wash. I had to remove the fuse again. The directionals work but do not cancel after making a turn. -
